Rising Star Franco Colapinto Poses New Challenge for Carlos Sainz at Williams
Carlos Sainz advised to stay vigilant: "Franco Colapinto is younger and more affordable"
Carlos Sainz might encounter rivalry even before joining Williams
Carlos Sainz has been advised to stay vigilant when he joins Williams next year.
Williams successfully secured a major deal by signing Sainz, who is leaving Ferrari, to join their team as a driver alongside Alex Albon starting in 2025 and continuing thereafter.
Since that time, Franco Colapinto has joined them and caught attention in the F1 paddock with his remarkable performances.
Colapinto stepped in as a stand-in for Logan Sargeant, who had not been performing well, and has shown commanding driving skills even though he lacks experience.
Guenther Steiner mentioned on the Red Flags podcast that next year, Williams will observe how Carlos performs in the other car and then evaluate Alex's position.
"If they are on the same level, the argument will be: ‘We have Colapinto, who is a decade younger than these individuals and is much more affordable, yet he currently lacks a racing seat’."
"It's advantageous to be in this situation."
"I'm confident they'll attempt to secure a spot for him. He will be under scrutiny from others."
"He experienced some minor mishaps, but somehow he manages to get the timing just right again."
Steiner praised Colapinto for his remarkable overtaking move during the first lap of the Singapore Grand Prix, stating, "What he accomplished is truly impressive."
"He noticed an opening and went for it. He's determined to prove he belongs there."
"I believe he did. Over the course of three races, he proved that he belonged."
Nevertheless, Steiner maintains that Williams will remain satisfied with their decision to invest in a lucrative contract for grand prix victor Sainz.
Steiner mentioned that having someone like Sainz on the team is something they likely don't regret, as it is beneficial for the team.
"Clearly, it is a significant advantage as he draws the attention of others."
James Vowles should take pride in discovering Colapinto. However, the question remains: why was this discovery made three months after it should have been?
"I would attempt to hand him over to Audi, though I'm unsure whether they have any interest in him."
He has demonstrated his ability to accomplish it, so why not give him a chance? Besides, there aren't many alternatives.
Albon has secured a contract with Williams that spans multiple years, and Carlos has a similar arrangement.
"Colapinto finds himself in a tough predicament, caught between two difficult options!"
