Examination of potential successor for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025
Key characteristics of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who might succeed Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, have been recognized.
The spot Hamilton will vacate when he moves to Ferrari in 2025 is one of only four positions yet to be occupied for the coming year.
Teenager Antonelli, who is presently competing in Formula 2, is expected to move up to F1, taking over Hamilton's position.
The 17-year-old from Italy has long been considered exceptionally gifted.
Antonelli received multiple offers from F1 driver academies when he was only 13 years old, according to F2 commentator Alex Jacques speaking to F1.com.
After selecting Mercedes to steer his professional journey, Antonelli showcased remarkable finesse and mastery, securing victory at Zandvoort, the same venue for this weekend's F1 comeback, in a championship-winning FRECA series.
Jacques thinks that winning at Zandvoort under tough conditions showcased his ability to advance, signaling to future F1 team leaders that he had the necessary talent.
"Exceptional talent can be highlighted by performance in wet conditions," he stated.
Jacques mentions that Antonelli has demonstrated a remarkable level of calmness on the race track, which is unusual for someone his age.
He emphasized that staying calm and being flexible are essential qualities for today's drivers.
Mercedes decided to skip Formula 3 and immediately advance Antonelli to Formula 2 for this season.
He became part of Prema, the team that has supported the growth of drivers like Pierre Gasly, Charles Leclerc, Mick Schumacher, and Oscar Piastri.
Piastri, in a remarkable feat, secured the F2 championship during his first season while also participating in a testing schedule for F1. Similarly, this year, Antonelli has been juggling his F2 commitments alongside testing sessions for Mercedes F1 vehicles.
In rainy conditions at Silverstone, Antonelli secured his inaugural F1 race win. Additionally, he triumphed in the F2 feature race held in Hungary.
Jacques emphasized that the two wins are just small indications of a talent that was expected to be so evident that a promotion to Formula 1 was unquestionable.
Jacques mentioned that Antonelli possesses "remarkable core speed, a composed mindset, and quick adaptability," qualities he intends to bring to Formula 1 next season.
It seems he is poised to join a revitalized team.
Mercedes has secured victory in three out of the last four grand prix races, with Hamilton winning two of them.
Should they continue their strong performance and secure additional victories this season, Antonelli may face heightened pressure if he is chosen to succeed Hamilton.
However, Toto Wolff has openly expressed his admiration for the young talent.
Mercedes may possess a driver who could become the next Max Verstappen.
