Rift in Racing Ranks: Daniel Ricciardo and Helmut Marko Clash Over RB F1 Team’s Status
Setback for Daniel Ricciardo as Helmut Marko Challenges 'Junior Team' View
Daniel Ricciardo and Helmut Marko hold conflicting views on the status of the RB F1 team
Helmut Marko has expressed a differing opinion on Daniel Ricciardo's characterization of the RB F1 team.
The team, formerly known as AlphaTauri and associated with Red Bull, has competed under a new name this season.
Ricciardo's belief that RB has progressed beyond just serving as a development team for Red Bull has been challenged.
"Being here wouldn't sit well with me if it still seemed like a team for younger players. I'm 35," said Ricciardo.
Red Bull's Marko disclosed to ESPN their rationale for continuing with Sergio Perez: "The shareholders made it evident that Racing Bulls serves as a feeder team, and this approach will shape the future."
At the beginning of the season, Ricciardo was aiming for an upgrade to join Max Verstappen in the Red Bull team, potentially replacing Perez.
However, he lost his form just as Perez secured a new deal.
Despite Perez's recent decline in performance, Red Bull has assured that there will be no changes to their driver lineup midway through the season, ensuring Ricciardo retains his seat in the RB car for the upcoming F1 race in Zandvoort.
"Marko revealed to ESPN that if Daniel could have outpaced Yuki Tsunoda by a considerable margin, there was a plan to reintegrate him into Red Bull Racing."
"However, his performance was inconsistent. As a result, up to this point, he hasn't met the standards required to be a driver for Red Bull Racing."
Ricciardo approached the last race before the summer hiatus, held in Belgium, calmly accepting the possibility that it might be his ultimate Formula 1 Grand Prix.
His lackluster performances added to the speculation that RB might consider substituting him with Liam Lawson.
For the time being, this concern has been put to rest.
However, Ricciardo appears likely to not achieve his objective of making a comeback to Red Bull, an ambition he explicitly stated upon his return to F1 a year earlier.
Ricciardo, previously let go by McLaren, found himself without a seat at the start of 2023. However, he made a comeback halfway through the season with AlphaTauri, where he showcased his talent once again.
