Ricciardo’s Red Bull Dreams Dashed as Marko Confirms ‘Junior Team’ Status
Setback for Daniel Ricciardo as Helmut Marko contradicts 'junior team' position
Daniel Ricciardo and Helmut Marko present opposing views regarding the RB F1 team
Helmut Marko has refuted Daniel Ricciardo's portrayal of the RB F1 team.
The team, formerly known as AlphaTauri and previously associated with Red Bull, has adopted a new name for this season.
However, Ricciardo's belief that RB has moved beyond just serving as a development program for Red Bull has been challenged.
Ricciardo mentioned that he would not feel at ease if the team still seemed like a junior team, especially considering he's now 35 years old.
Red Bull's Marko informed ESPN about their choice to retain Sergio Perez, stating, "The shareholders made it clear that Racing Bulls is a development team, and this approach will define our future direction."
At the beginning of this season, Ricciardo was aiming to secure a spot in the Red Bull team alongside Max Verstappen, replacing Perez.
However, he experienced a decline in performance, whereas Perez secured a new agreement.
Despite Perez experiencing a significant decline in performance, Red Bull has announced that they will not replace him with another driver midseason. Consequently, Ricciardo will continue to drive for the team when the Formula 1 season picks up again at Zandvoort.
"Marko informed ESPN that Daniel had been given a spot in the car, and if he had shown a much higher speed compared to Yuki Tsunoda, there was a plan to reintegrate him into Red Bull Racing."
"However, he has been inconsistent. Consequently, he has not yet met the standards required to become a driver for Red Bull Racing."
Ricciardo approached the last race before the summer break in Belgium with a sense of calm, accepting that it might be his last Formula 1 grand prix.
The pressure on him had increased due to his lackluster performance, leading to the possibility that RB might choose to substitute him with Liam Lawson.
For the moment, this concern has been put to rest.
However, it appears that Ricciardo is unlikely to achieve his objective of rejoining Red Bull, a target he explicitly stated upon his return to Formula 1 last year.
Daniel Ricciardo, who had been let go by McLaren, missed the early part of the 2023 season. He was later signed by AlphaTauri halfway through the season, where he showcased his skills once again.
