Ricciardo’s Apology and Hulkenberg Clash Mar RB’s Italian GP: Penalties and Frustrations Unfold at Monza
Daniel Ricciardo comments on his collision with Nico Hulkenberg, stating, "I believed there was enough room; I said sorry."
Daniel Ricciardo addresses the incident involving Haas during the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he offered an apology to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo was competing with Nico Hulkenberg in the middle of the field during the first lap of the Monza race on Sunday when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed there was enough room, but then experienced a collision – causing Hulkenberg in the Haas to be pushed onto the dirt and lose a position to his teammate Kevin Magnussen.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident, but later had to serve an additional 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched his car during the initial penalty at the pit stop.
Ricciardo finished a challenging race at his home circuit in 13th place for the Red Bull team.
"In the end, we simply weren't fast enough today, even disregarding the penalties," he stated.
“We gave it our best shot, and I was really having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but I ended up colliding with Nico at Turn 8.
"I talked to him after the race. I believed we had enough space, but I felt the collision and realized I hadn't given him sufficient room, so I apologized."
"It's challenging because you push yourself to the limit, but even the tiniest differences can have a big impact."
“The vehicle performed adequately afterward, and we exerted maximum effort with the resources available. I aimed to extract the highest performance from the car starting Friday afternoon up until today.”
"From my perspective, I’m feeling much improved this weekend, and we nearly managed to earn some points."
Tsunoda 'disheartened' after incident
Laurent Mekies from RB stated that the Italian Grand Prix was heavily influenced by Hulkenberg. A crash involving Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg led to the early conclusion of Yuki Tsunoda’s race.
"It's really disappointing; my race was essentially over just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda expressed.
“I attempted to give ample room, but it appeared he froze up, resulting in him losing control and colliding with me.
“Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained to the floor.
“I immediately sensed the problem and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding, making it impossible for me to control it.
"We're heading to Baku and Singapore next, and our car is expected to do well at those tracks. We’re optimistic about having successful weekends coming up."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to lose important track time in the newly updated RB car that was brought to Monza.
"Regarding today's race, Hulkenberg seemed to take control. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track, and later Nico collided with Yuki, which led us to retire the car," he stated.
"The most disappointing part of Yuki’s retirement is missing out on 40 laps that could have enhanced our comprehension of the new updates we implemented."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty because we failed to properly implement the initial one."
"We must examine our procedures in this situation and take lessons from today's error. Although such incidents occur, our pit crew's performance has mostly been outstanding this season."
