Ricciardo Apologizes to Hulkenberg After Italian Grand Prix Collision; Tsunoda’s Race Ends in Frustration
Daniel Ricciardo addresses collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo comments on the incident involving Haas at the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he offered an apology to Nico Hulkenberg after the two collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Ricciardo clashed with Hulkenberg in the middle of the field during the first lap of Sunday’s race at Monza, with the incident occurring at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then he felt a collision – resulting in Hulkenberg's Haas being pushed off the track and losing a position to his teammate, Kevin Magnussen.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident but later had to serve a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched his car during the initial penalty at his pit stop.
Ricciardo finished a difficult race at his home track in 13th place for the Red Bull team.
“In the end, we just didn’t have the speed today, penalties aside,” he remarked.
"We gave it our best shot, and I was really enjoying the close racing at the beginning, but I ended up colliding with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I had a conversation with him. I initially believed there was enough space, but then I felt the impact, realizing I hadn't given him sufficient room. I apologized for that."
"It's challenging because you push yourself to the limit, but even the tiniest differences can be crucial."
"The vehicle performed adequately afterward, and we exerted maximum effort with the resources available. I aimed to extract the utmost performance from the car from Friday afternoon up until today."
"From my perspective, I am feeling much improved this weekend, and we nearly earned some points."
Tsunoda 'disappointed'
The Italian Grand Prix for Red Bull was "controlled by Hulkenberg," as stated by team member Laurent Mekies. A crash involving Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver's race being cut short.
"I'm quite disappointed; it's unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda remarked.
"I attempted to give him plenty of room, but it appeared he froze up, resulting in him losing control and colliding with me."
"Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained on the floor."
"I noticed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was slipping, and I just couldn't manage to drive it."
"Up next, we have races in Baku and Singapore. Our car is expected to perform strongly at these tracks, so we are optimistic about having successful weekends."
Mekies is frustrated over the Tsunoda incident because it cost him important track time with the new RB car at Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it can be said that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Subsequently, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he explained.
"The most exasperating part about Yuki retiring is missing out on 40 laps that would have enhanced our comprehension of the new updates we implemented."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty due to improper execution of the initial penalty."
"We must reexamine our protocols in this situation and take lessons from the error made today. While such incidents do occur, our pit crew's performance has largely been outstanding this season."
