Ricciardo Apologizes to Hulkenberg After Costly Italian GP Clash; Tsunoda Expresses Frustration Over Haas Incident
Daniel Ricciardo on collision with Nico Hulkenberg: "I believed there was enough room; I said sorry"
Daniel Ricciardo responds to the incident involving Haas at the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he said sorry to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Ricciardo was competing against Hulkenberg in the middle of the field during the first lap of Sunday's race at Monza when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then experienced a collision – resulting in Hulkenberg's Haas being pushed onto the dirt and losing a position to his teammate, Kevin Magnussen.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident, but later had to serve an additional 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched the car during the initial penalty at his pitstop.
Ricciardo finished a challenging race on home turf for the Red Bull team in 13th place.
"In the end, we just didn't have the speed today, even aside from the penalties," he remarked.
"We gave it our best shot, and I was having a great time with the close racing at the beginning, but I ended up colliding with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I talked to him and explained that I believed we had enough space, but I felt the collision and realized I hadn't given him enough room, so I apologized."
"It's challenging because you push yourself to the limit, but even the tiniest differences can have a big impact."
"The vehicle performed satisfactorily afterwards, and we exerted maximum effort with the resources available. I aimed to extract the utmost potential from the car starting from Friday afternoon until now."
"From my perspective, I’m feeling much improved this weekend, and we were nearly able to earn some points."
Tsunoda felt "frustrated"
The Italian Grand Prix for RB was heavily influenced by Nico Hulkenberg, stated team member Laurent Mekies. A crash involving the Haas driver and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver's race coming to an early end.
"I’m really annoyed; it’s unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda remarked.
"I attempted to give plenty of room, but it appeared he froze, lost control, and collided with me."
"Regrettably, we had to withdraw the vehicle from the race due to damage sustained to the undercarriage."
"I noticed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding, making it impossible for me to control it."
"With upcoming races in Baku and Singapore, we expect our car to perform strongly, so we are optimistic about having successful weekends."
Mekies was frustrated by the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to lose important track time with the upgraded RB car that was brought to Monza.
"Regarding the race today, it could be stated that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Subsequently, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he explained.
"The most disappointing part of Yuki's retirement is missing out on 40 laps that could have helped us better evaluate the new updates we brought to this event."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty as the initial one was not carried out properly."
"We need to reassess our procedures in light of this incident and take lessons from today's error. Although such issues can occur, our pit crew has typically performed outstandingly this season."
