Ricciardo Apologizes for Hulkenberg Clash Amid Penalty-Laden Italian GP; Tsunoda’s Frustration with Haas Incident Adds to RB’s Woes
Daniel Ricciardo comments on the incident with Nico Hulkenberg: "I believed there was enough room; I said sorry"
Daniel Ricciardo responds to the collision with Haas during the F1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he apologized to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Ricciardo was competing with Hulkenberg in the midfield during the first lap of Sunday's race at Monza when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then he experienced a collision – which resulted in Hulkenberg's Haas being pushed onto the dirt, allowing Kevin Magnussen, his teammate, to overtake him.
The Australian received a five-second penalty for the incident, but later had to serve a ten-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched his car during the initial pitstop punishment.
Ricciardo concluded a challenging race at his home Grand Prix for the Red Bull team in 13th place.
“In the end, we didn’t have the speed today, even without the penalties,” he commented.
"We gave it a shot, and I was having fun with the close racing early on, but I ended up colliding with Nico in Turn 8."
"After the race, I had a conversation with him. I initially believed there was enough space between us, but then I felt the collision, so I realized I hadn't left sufficient room. I apologized for that."
"It's challenging because you put in a lot of effort, but even tiny differences can have a big impact."
"The vehicle performed adequately afterward, and we exerted maximum effort with the resources available to us. Since Friday afternoon, I have been striving to extract the best performance from the car until today."
"In my opinion, I'm feeling much improved this weekend, and we were nearly able to earn some points."
Tsunoda 'Frustrated' After Italian GP
Laurent Mekies from Red Bull stated that their Italian Grand Prix was heavily influenced by Nico Hulkenberg. A crash between Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda led to the early conclusion of the Japanese driver's race.
"I'm quite annoyed; it's unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps after it began because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda expressed.
"I attempted to give as much room as I could, but it appeared that he froze up, lost control, and collided with me."
“Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained to the floor.
"I noticed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding, making it impossible for me to control it."
"Up next are Baku and Singapore, where our car is expected to excel, so we're optimistic about having successful weekends there."
Mekies is frustrated about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to lose important track time with the newly updated RB car at Monza.
"In today's race, Hulkenberg seemed to control the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Subsequently, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he stated.
"The most exasperating part of Yuki's retirement is losing 40 laps, which would have enhanced our knowledge of the new updates we implemented here."
Due to an error in carrying out the initial penalty, Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty.
"We need to reassess our procedures for this situation and take lessons from today's error. While incidents like this can occur, our pit crew's performance has mostly been outstanding this season."
