Ricciardo Apologizes for Hulkenberg Clash Amid Penalty-Laden Italian GP: A Tough Day for RB Team
Daniel Ricciardo comments on the incident involving Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo responds to the collision with Haas during the F1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he apologized to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo was contending with Nico Hulkenberg in the middle of the field during the first lap of the Monza race on Sunday when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then experienced a collision – with Hulkenberg's Haas being pushed off the track and losing a position to his teammate, Kevin Magnussen.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident. However, he was later handed a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched his car while he was serving the initial penalty during his pit stop.
Ricciardo finished a challenging race in his home country for the Red Bull team in 13th place.
"In the end, even without considering the penalties, we just weren't fast enough today," he commented.
"We made an effort, and I was having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but I collided with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I talked to him and explained that I believed there was enough space. However, I felt the impact, realized I hadn't given him sufficient room, and apologized for it."
"It's challenging because you put in a lot of effort, but even the tiniest differences can have a significant impact."
"The vehicle seemed alright afterward, and we gave it our all with the resources available. From Friday afternoon until today, I endeavored to extract the utmost performance from the car."
“I’m feeling much improved this weekend, and we nearly managed to earn some points.”
Tsunoda 'frustrated' after Italian GP
The Italian Grand Prix for Red Bull was influenced by Hulkenberg, claims team member Laurent Mekies. A crash involving the Haas driver and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver having to retire from the race.
Yuki Tsunoda expressed his frustration, saying it was disappointing that his race effectively ended just a few laps in following a collision with Nico.
"I attempted to give him plenty of room, but it appeared he froze up, which made him lose control and collide with me."
“Regrettably, we had to pull the car out of the race due to sustaining damage to the floor."
"I sensed the issue immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding and I just couldn't control it."
"We're heading to Baku and Singapore next, and our car is expected to perform well at those tracks. We're optimistic about having successful weekends there."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it resulted in a loss of important track time with the upgraded RB car that was introduced at Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it can be stated that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty after pushing him off the track. Subsequently, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he explained.
"The most disappointing part of Yuki’s retirement is that we missed out on 40 laps that could have enhanced our knowledge of the new updates we implemented at this event."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty because the initial penalty wasn't implemented properly."
"We'll have to reassess our protocols in this situation and take lessons from the error made today. Incidents like this occur, but overall, our pit crew has performed outstandingly this season."
