Ricciardo Apologizes for Clash with Hulkenberg at Italian GP; Tsunoda Frustrated by Early Retirement
Daniel Ricciardo comments on collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo addresses the incident involving Haas during the F1 Italian Grand Prix
After a collision in the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he apologized to Nico Hulkenberg.
During the first lap of Sunday’s race in Monza, RB driver Ricciardo was competing with Hulkenberg in the middle of the field when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room but then experienced a collision. This incident caused Hulkenberg's Haas to veer onto the dirt, allowing Kevin Magnussen, Hulkenberg's teammate, to pass him.
The Australian driver initially received a five-second penalty for the incident. However, this was later increased to a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics made contact with his car while he was serving the initial penalty during a pit stop.
Ricciardo concluded a challenging race at his home track for the Red Bull team, finishing in 13th place.
"In the end, we just didn't have the speed today, even aside from the penalties," he stated.
"We gave it a shot, and I was having fun with the close racing early on, but then I collided with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I had a conversation with him. I initially believed there was enough space, but I felt the impact and realized I hadn't given him sufficient room, so I apologized."
"It's challenging because you push yourself, but even the tiniest differences can be crucial."
"The car performed well afterward, and we gave it our all with the resources available. I aimed to extract the best performance from the car starting from Friday afternoon until today."
“I’m feeling much improved this weekend, and we were nearly able to earn some points.”
Tsunoda 'frustrated' after Italian GP
Laurent Mekies from RB stated that the team's performance at the Italian Grand Prix was heavily influenced by Nico Hulkenberg. A crash involving Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver's race coming to an early end.
Yuki Tsunoda expressed his frustration, stating that his race was essentially over just a few laps in following a collision with Nico.
"I attempted to give as much room as I could, but it appeared that he froze up, leading him to lose control and collide with me."
"Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to sustaining damage to the floor."
"I sensed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding and I just couldn't manage to drive it."
"We have upcoming races in Baku and Singapore, where our car is expected to perform strongly. We're optimistic about having successful weekends at both events."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to miss important time on the track with the new RB car that was brought to Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it can be said that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Subsequently, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he stated.
"The most disappointing part of Yuki's retirement is that we missed out on 40 laps that could have improved our knowledge of the new updates we implemented here."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty because the initial one was not applied properly."
"We need to reassess our processes in this situation and take lessons from today's error. Incidents like this occur, but overall, our pit crew has performed outstandingly this season."
