Ricciardo Apologizes After Hulkenberg Collision at Italian GP; Tsunoda Expresses Frustration Over Early Exit
Daniel Ricciardo comments on his collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo responds to the incident involving Haas at the F1 Italian Grand Prix.
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he offered an apology to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
During the opening lap of Sunday's race at Monza, RB driver Ricciardo and Hulkenberg encountered each other in the midfield battle, leading to a collision at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then experienced a collision – with Hulkenberg's Haas being pushed onto the dirt and losing a position to his teammate, Kevin Magnussen.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident. However, he was subsequently required to serve a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics touched his car while he was completing the initial penalty during his pit stop.
Ricciardo concluded a difficult race at home for the Red Bull team by finishing in 13th place.
"In the end, we lacked speed today, even discounting the penalties," he stated.
"We gave it our best shot, and I was having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but then I collided with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I had a conversation with him. I initially believed we had enough space, but I felt the impact, indicating I didn't leave sufficient room. I then apologized for it."
"It's challenging because you push yourself to the limit, but even the tiniest differences can have a significant impact."
"The vehicle performed reasonably well afterward, and we gave it our all with the resources available. From Friday afternoon until today, I aimed to extract the best performance from the car."
"I personally feel much better this weekend, and we came very close to earning points."
Tsunoda Leaves Italian GP Frustrated
The Italian Grand Prix for Red Bull was heavily influenced by Nico Hulkenberg, claims team member Laurent Mekies. The race came to an unfortunate end for Yuki Tsunoda after a collision with the Haas driver.
Yuki Tsunoda expressed his frustration, stating that it was unfortunate his race ended just a few laps in after a collision with Nico.
"I made an effort to keep a safe distance, but it appears he froze up, resulting in him losing control and colliding with me."
"Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained to its floor."
"I sensed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding and I just couldn’t control it."
"We're heading to Baku and Singapore next, where our car is expected to perform well. We're optimistic about having successful weekends there."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it cost him important track time with the new RB car at Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it could be argued that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track, and then Nico collided with Yuki, which ultimately caused us to retire the car," he explained.
"The most disappointing part about Yuki's retirement is that we missed out on 40 laps that could have helped us better understand the new updates we implemented."
“Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty as we did not properly implement the initial one.”
“We must re-evaluate our processes in light of this situation and take lessons from the error made today. Although such incidents occur, our pit crew's performance has overall been outstanding this season.”
