Ricciardo Apologizes After Hulkenberg Clash: Penalties and Frustrations Mar RB’s Italian GP
Daniel Ricciardo addresses his collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo comments on the clash with Haas during the F1 race in Italy
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he offered an apology to Nico Hulkenberg after their collision during the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo was competing against Nico Hulkenberg in the middle of the pack during the first lap of Sunday's race at Monza when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then he experienced a collision – which resulted in Hulkenberg's Haas being pushed onto the dirt and losing a position to his teammate Kevin Magnussen.
An Australian driver received a five-second penalty for an incident, but subsequently had to serve a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics made contact with his car while he was serving the initial penalty during a pitstop.
Ricciardo concluded a difficult race at home for the Red Bull team in 13th place.
“In the end, we were too slow today, even without considering the penalties,” he stated.
"We gave it a shot, and I was having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but then I collided with Nico in Turn 8."
"After the race, I talked to him. I initially believed there was enough space, but I felt the impact, indicating I hadn't given him sufficient room. I then apologized for that."
"It's challenging because you put in a lot of effort, but even the tiniest differences can have a significant impact."
"The vehicle performed satisfactorily afterward, and we exerted maximum effort with the resources available. I aimed to extract the utmost potential from the car starting from Friday afternoon until today."
"I personally feel much better this weekend, and we came close to earning points."
Tsunoda Felt 'Frustrated'
Red Bull's performance at the Italian Grand Prix was heavily influenced by Hulkenberg, said team member Laurent Mekies. A crash involving Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver having to retire from the race.
"I'm quite irritated; it's unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps after the beginning because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda remarked.
"I attempted to maintain ample distance, but it appeared he froze up, resulting in him losing control and colliding with me."
"Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained to the floor."
"I immediately noticed the issue and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding, making it impossible for me to drive."
"Up next are the races in Baku and Singapore. Our vehicle is expected to do well on those tracks, so we're optimistic about having successful weekends."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to miss important track time with the upgraded RB car that was brought to Monza.
“The race today seemed to be controlled by Hulkenberg. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Subsequently, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car,” he stated.
The most disappointing part about Yuki's retirement is that we missed out on 40 laps that could have helped us better understand the new updates we implemented here.
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty as the initial one was not properly carried out."
"We must reassess our protocols in this situation and draw lessons from the error made today. While such incidents occur, our pit crew's performance has been outstanding overall this season."
