Ricciardo Apologizes After Hulkenberg Clash at Italian GP: A Day of Penalties and Frustrations for RB Team
Daniel Ricciardo comments on his collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo addresses the incident with Haas during the F1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he offered an apology to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Ricciardo and Hulkenberg were contending for position in the middle of the pack during the first lap of Sunday's race at Monza when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then experienced a collision. This incident pushed Hulkenberg's Haas off the track, allowing his teammate Kevin Magnussen to overtake him.
The Australian driver initially received a five-second penalty for the incident, but ended up having to serve a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics inadvertently touched the car during the pitstop when he was serving the initial penalty.
Ricciardo concluded a difficult race on his home turf for the RB team by finishing in 13th place.
"In the end, we just didn't have the speed today, even disregarding the penalties," he stated.
"We gave it a shot, and I was having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but then I collided with Nico at Turn 8."
After the race, I had a conversation with him. I initially believed there was enough space, but then I felt the impact and realized I hadn't given him sufficient room. I apologized for that.
"It's challenging because you put in a lot of effort, but even the tiniest differences can have a big impact."
"The car performed adequately afterwards, and we exerted maximum effort with the resources available. I aimed to extract the utmost potential from the vehicle starting from Friday afternoon through to today."
“I’m feeling much improved this weekend, and we nearly managed to earn some points.”
Tsunoda felt 'frustrated'
The Italian Grand Prix for RB was heavily influenced by Hulkenberg, as stated by team member Laurent Mekies. A crash involving Haas driver Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver being unable to finish the race.
"I'm quite annoyed; it's unfortunate because my race ended just a few laps in after colliding with Nico," Tsunoda remarked.
"I attempted to give him plenty of room, but it appeared he panicked, resulting in him losing control and colliding with me."
“Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained to its floor.
"I noticed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding, and I just couldn't control it."
"We're heading to Baku and Singapore next, where our car is expected to do well. We're optimistic about having successful weekends there."
Mekies is frustrated about the Tsunoda incident because it cost him crucial track time with the upgraded RB car that was brought to Monza.
“Today’s race was largely controlled by Hulkenberg. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Subsequently, Nico collided with Yuki, which ultimately caused us to retire the car,” he stated.
"The most disappointing part of Yuki retiring is that we missed out on 40 laps that could have helped us learn more about the new updates we brought here."
"Daniel was given another 10-second penalty as we didn't properly carry out the initial one."
"We must evaluate our processes in this situation and take lessons from today's error. While such incidents occur, our pit crew's performance has mostly been outstanding this season."
