Ricciardo Apologizes After Hulkenberg Clash as Penalties Hamper RB’s Italian GP Performance
Daniel Ricciardo comments on altercation with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo addresses the collision with Haas during the Italian Grand Prix in Formula 1
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he apologized to Nico Hulkenberg after the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix due to a collision that occurred between them on the first lap.
Red Bull driver Ricciardo found himself in a tussle with Hulkenberg during the first lap of Sunday's race at Monza, with their cars colliding at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then he made contact with Hulkenberg's Haas, which was pushed onto the dirt, allowing Kevin Magnussen, Hulkenberg's teammate, to pass.
The Australian driver initially received a five-second penalty for the incident, but ultimately had to serve a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics made contact with the car during the initial penalty at his pitstop.
Ricciardo concluded a challenging race on his home turf for the Red Bull team, finishing in 13th place.
"In the end, we didn't have the speed we needed today, even if there hadn't been any penalties," he commented.
"We gave it a go, and I was having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but I collided with Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I talked to him and mentioned that although I believed there was enough space, I felt the collision, indicating I hadn't allowed sufficient room. I then offered my apologies."
"It's challenging because you put in maximum effort, but even tiny differences can impact the outcome."
"The car seemed fine afterward, and we gave it everything we had. Since Friday afternoon, I was focused on getting the most out of the car."
“I’m feeling much improved this weekend, and we nearly earned some points.”
Tsunoda 'Disappointed'
RB's performance in the Italian Grand Prix was "influenced by Hulkenberg," according to team member Laurent Mekies. A crash involving Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver's race coming to an early end.
"I'm quite upset; it's disappointing that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," said Tsunoda.
"I attempted to give him as much room as I could, but it appeared that he froze up, leading to a loss of control and a collision with me."
"Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to damage sustained to the floor."
"Right away, I noticed something was wrong and made an effort to keep going, but the car was skidding, making it impossible for me to drive."
"With Baku and Singapore coming up, we expect our car to perform strongly, so we're optimistic about having successful weekends ahead."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to miss important track time with the upgraded RB car at Monza.
"In today's race, it could be argued that Hulkenberg set the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track, and then Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he stated.
"The most disappointing part about Yuki's retirement is missing out on 40 laps that could have enhanced our knowledge of the new updates we implemented here."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty because we improperly handled the initial one."
"We must reassess our protocols in light of this situation and take lessons from today's error. Incidents like this occur, but overall, our pit crew's performance has been outstanding this season."
