Ricciardo Apologises After Hulkenberg Clash in Chaotic Italian GP; Tsunoda’s Frustration Mounts
Daniel Ricciardo addresses collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo comments on the incident involving Haas at the Italian Grand Prix in Formula 1
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he apologized to Nico Hulkenberg after they had a collision on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
During the opening lap of Sunday's race at Monza, Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg found themselves fighting for position in the midfield when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed there was enough room, but he experienced an impact – which resulted in Hulkenberg's Haas being pushed onto the dirt, allowing Kevin Magnussen, his teammate, to overtake him.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident. However, he subsequently had to serve a ten-second penalty because one of his mechanics made contact with his car while he was serving the initial penalty during his pit stop.
Ricciardo finished a challenging race at home for the Red Bull team in 13th place.
“In the end, we didn’t have enough speed today, even without factoring in the penalties,” he stated.
"We gave it a shot, and I was having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but then I collided with Nico in Turn 8."
"After the race, I had a conversation with him. I believed there was enough space, but I felt the collision, so I realized I hadn't given him sufficient room, and I said I was sorry."
"It's challenging because you push yourself to the limit, but even the tiniest differences can have a significant impact."
"The car performed adequately afterward, and we gave it our all with the resources available. From Friday afternoon until today, I was striving to extract the utmost performance from the vehicle."
“I personally feel much better this weekend, and we were almost able to earn some points.”
Tsunoda was 'frustrated'
Laurent Mekies from Red Bull stated that the Italian Grand Prix was influenced by Hulkenberg, as a crash between Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver's race being cut short.
"I'm quite disappointed; it's unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda remarked.
"I made an effort to give him plenty of room, but it appeared he panicked, which led to him losing control and colliding with me."
"Regrettably, we had to pull the car out of the race due to damage sustained to the floor."
"I noticed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding and I just couldn't control it."
"We're looking forward to racing in Baku and Singapore next. Our car is expected to do well on those tracks, so we're optimistic about having successful weekends."
Mekies is frustrated by the Tsunoda incident because it cost him important track time in the upgraded RB car that was brought to Monza.
"Regarding today's race, it can be said that Hulkenberg controlled the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Later, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he stated.
"The most disappointing part about Yuki's retirement is missing out on 40 laps that could have helped us better understand the new updates we brought in."
"Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty because we improperly carried out the initial one."
"We must evaluate our processes in this situation and take lessons from today's error. Although these incidents occur, our pit crew's performance has predominantly been outstanding this season."
