Red Bull’s Uncertain Faith: Sergio Perez’s F1 Future Hangs in the Balance Amidst Replacement Rumors
Questions Arise Regarding Red Bull’s Continued Support for Sergio Perez
The choice of Red Bull to maintain their support for Sergio Perez has come under scrutiny.
It has been hinted that Sergio Perez's position at Red Bull could be uncertain for the remainder of the 2024 F1 season.
Sky Sports News correspondent Craig Slater believes that Red Bull's choice to stick with Perez might not be so straightforward considering the increasing scrutiny and rumors suggesting that Perez could be swapped out for Daniel Ricciardo or Liam Lawson during the summer hiatus.
After a critical meeting with major players such as Red Bull team principal Christian Horner and advisor Helmut Marko on Monday, it's understood that Horner spoke to the staff at the team's Milton Keynes factory, announcing that Perez will remain as Max Verstappen's teammate.
"Slater mentioned on the Sky Sports F1 podcast that it's not entirely certain he'll finish the season. He believes that Christian Horner would prefer if he did."
"I really admire Checo and believe he's fantastic. I also hope he concludes the season on a high note. However, I wouldn't rule out the possibility that, should there be no improvement in his performances after the season resumes, speculation will once again arise regarding his chances for the championship if it remains undecided."
Slater mentioned, "In the past, this would have likely been a decision made by Helmut Marko, but this time, it was Christian Horner who made the call, and that could be noteworthy.
"I believe Marko is best described as 'the tinkerman' – he has a tendency to shuffle personnel around rather mercilessly. It seems to me that Horner perceives a lot of disruption in such actions, questioning the real benefits they bring."
Ricciardo hasn't been making a strong case for himself. For some reason, they're hesitant to elevate Tsunoda, and Lawson remains somewhat of a mystery. Therefore, deciding on the next steps isn't easy.
"It's important to acknowledge that many skilled drivers have faced difficulties when paired with Verstappen. Therefore, Checo's challenges aren't particularly unique in that regard.
He possesses approximately 35 percent of the points Max has accumulated. If this trend in scoring continues, they won't secure the Constructors' Championship.
"High-ranking officials at Red Bull have been telling Horner, 'consider the evidence, ultimately it's your call…' and as of now, he has decided to maintain Checo's position."
Former Formula 1 team strategist Bernie Collins, previously aligned with Perez during his stint at Force India/Racing Point, expressed astonishment that if such a decision was imminent, it wasn't made sooner rather than later.
He clearly demonstrated an impressive performance during the qualifying round at Spa. However, he was on the brink of elimination towards the end of Q2, narrowly avoiding a position as low as 15th, ultimately securing the 2nd place he achieved. It was a narrow escape, and Checo wasn't the only reason for this outcome.
"In numerous respects, they must evaluate their championship standing and consider: 'Which driver could they assign to that position who is assured to outperform in the upcoming 10 races?'"
"Considering the current circumstances, it's interesting to note that just a short while ago, there was speculation about Ricciardo's security in his [RB] position. We've really seen a full spectrum of developments since then."
"I believe they cannot confidently assess the current members of the junior team and assert that they will perform more effectively. This, in my opinion, has been the crucial aspect of this decision."
