Red Bull’s Strategy Blunder Costs Verstappen at Hungarian GP, Admits Helmut Marko
Helmut Marko highlights Red Bull's "major mistake" as Max Verstappen expresses his frustration.
"We totally underestimated it, and Mercedes capitalized on the opportunity."
Helmut Marko has admitted that Red Bull is fully accountable for Max Verstappen’s underwhelming performance at the Hungarian Grand Prix, asserting that “the team is completely at fault”.
On Sunday at the Hungaroring, Verstappen experienced a highly frustrating afternoon, managing to secure only fifth place for the Red Bull team.
The Dutch driver found himself trailing Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton twice as Red Bull experienced an undercut.
Poor strategy choices by Red Bull made Verstappen furious during team radio communications.
Verstappen made a mistake in his attempt to pass Hamilton at Turn 1, leading to a crash.
The Dutch athlete emerged unhurt but fell to fifth place.
Following the race, Marko admitted that Red Bull underestimated the challenge of overtaking.
Marko told the Austrian broadcaster ORF that the team is completely to blame.
Every simulation produced a varying outcome for overtaking maneuvers. However, we underestimated the situation, which allowed Mercedes to capitalize on it.
"I haven't had the chance to meet Verstappen yet, but I will in the near future. We deliberately chose to deal with the frustration expressed over the team radio, believing that having fresher tyres would make us quicker later on. Anyone familiar with Verstappen knows this strategy can work. However, it doesn't need to be discussed over the team radio."
“We were unable to overtake Hamilton, and that was our fault. Additionally, the position Max rejoined the race after the initial pit stop was due to our error. We acknowledge that we made a significant misjudgment concerning the overtaking maneuver.”
McLaren's 1-2 finish has reduced Red Bull's advantage in the F1 constructors’ championship to only 51 points.
Marko acknowledges that Red Bull "desperately requires" the summer hiatus to reorganize.
"We desperately require it," Marko remarked regarding the summer vacation. "During the initial three races, we believed we would experience a season akin to the previous year, but then unexpectedly, there was a shift."
“Max is not accustomed to such conditions, and we, too, are not sufficiently familiar with the necessity of battling fiercely against competitors. This aspect certainly enhances the experience for fans and journalists, but we must withstand and eventually overcome these challenges.”
"We're maintaining our top position in both championship standings. With numerous races left, it's premature to consider anything as lost. However, we must avoid making minor and avoidable errors."
