Red Bull’s Sergio Perez to Navigate Dutch GP and Beyond with New Race Engineer Amid Performance Scrutiny
Why Sergio Perez Will Work with a Different Race Engineer for the Upcoming Four F1 Events
A new face will join Sergio Perez's crew in the Red Bull team starting at the Dutch Grand Prix.
According to sources from Crash.net, Sergio Perez is set to work with a different race engineer for the upcoming four F1 races, beginning with the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend.
This is due to the fact that Hugh Bird, who currently serves as Perez's race engineer, will be taking paternity leave.
Red Bull's performance engineer, Richard Wood, will fill in for Bird at the next four events. In the meantime, Richard Cooke will take over Wood's responsibilities.
Crash.net has learned that Bird plans to be present at Zandvoort to assist with the transition, prior to starting his paternity leave.
Bird, who has been collaborating with Perez since the Mexican driver's debut at Red Bull in 2021, is scheduled to resume his duties at the United States Grand Prix in late October.
The timing of this change isn't great for Perez, as his position is still not secure, even though Red Bull assured after the Belgian Grand Prix that he will complete the rest of the season.
Red Bull executives convened on Monday following the Spa-Francorchamps race to deliberate over Perez’s future with the team. This meeting comes in the wake of several lackluster performances that have sparked widespread rumors regarding his job security.
Christian Horner, the team principal, informed the staff at Red Bull's Milton Keynes headquarters that Perez would remain with the team for the latter part of the season.
Since the Miami Grand Prix in May, Perez has not secured a position above seventh place and has accumulated only 28 points over the last seven races.
Following recent events, he has now fallen to seventh place in the championship standings, trailing his teammate Max Verstappen by a significant 146 points.
Perez’s lackluster performance has created a significant problem for Red Bull. The team is feeling the heat in the constructors’ championship as McLaren is now just 42 points away from the defending world champions.
