Red Bull’s Ricciardo vs. Lawson ‘Shootout’ Clarified: Horner Insists It’s All About Content, Not a Perez Replacement
Red Bull has provided more information regarding the upcoming Formula 1 test involving Daniel Ricciardo and Liam Lawson. Christian Horner has explained the specifics of this test.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner emphasizes that the upcoming Formula 1 test for Daniel Ricciardo and Liam Lawson is merely a "filming day," stating that the focus is entirely on creating content.
Ricciardo and Lawson are set to drive a 2024 VCARB Formula 1 vehicle at Imola this week.
The evaluation has been labeled a 'shootout' to determine which driver might take over Sergio Perez's position at Red Bull for the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
In the past few months, Perez has had difficulty maintaining his performance, earning only 28 points across his last eight races.
His recent performance decline has threatened Red Bull's lead in the F1 constructors' championship.
During a media briefing after the race at Spa, with outlets such as Crash.net in attendance, Horner provided further information regarding the forthcoming test.
"It's a shoot day, so they'll be recording. It's all focused on creating content," Horner stated.
The present vehicle allows for a range of 200 km, enabling extensive filming sessions for both participants.
Horner explained that the event is solely for filming purposes and not for testing tires.
“Yes, today is a day for filming,” he mentioned.
Evaluating Ricciardo's overall performance, he commented: "I believe he's performed decently."
"I didn't watch the race itself, but I noticed that he finished in 11th place, which later became 10th after Russell's disqualification. Given that he started on the soft tire, it’s clear he drove well."
It is believed that Horner will have a meeting with Helmut Marko on Monday to talk about the current issues at Red Bull.
This isn't the first instance where Red Bull has altered their lineup during the season; in 2016, Max Verstappen took over Daniil Kvyat's position just before the Spanish Grand Prix.
In 2019, during the summer break, Alex Albon took over Pierre Gasly's position.
Horner emphasizes that their main focus remains on providing support to Perez.
"We're fortunate to have all the necessary information," he said. "Our main focus is to support Checo and to figure out his requirements."
"Everyone hopes he can make a comeback and succeed."
