**Red Bull’s Rental Riddle: Liam Lawson’s Future Clouds Ricciardo’s 2025 Prospects**
"Liam Lawson's 'Rent Him Out' Remark Introduces New Twist to Driver Market
Contractual clause revelation impacts Daniel Ricciardo"
Christian Horner has explained Red Bull's decision-making process regarding the future of Liam Lawson.
Helmut Marko's assertion that young driver Lawson would be placed in one of their vehicles, apparently alluding to either Red Bull or their affiliate team RB, sparked excitement leading up to this weekend's F1 Dutch Grand Prix.
Daniel Ricciardo seemed to be the most vulnerable among the four drivers at Red Bull and RB, as he was the only one without a contract for 2025.
However, Horner has clarified that Marko's statement doesn't unequivocally suggest that Lawson will be given a spot in one of the team's vehicles.
“The performance,” remarked the Red Bull team leader to Sky Sports, alluding to other vehicles in the Formula 1 lineup.
"I directly questioned Marko, and he confirmed that Lawson will secure a Formula 1 seat for next year."
"We could lease him. It's a possibility."
"Everything is subject to change. If we decide not to extend Liam's contract, he will be available as a free agent in 2025."
"There are designated times outlined in drivers' contracts when this issue becomes important."
"I spoke with Helmut. He clarified that he didn't specify the car; he just mentioned going for a drive."
Horner’s acknowledgment seems to substantiate that Red Bull holds a contractual right concerning Lawson: they can choose to put him in their vehicle, an RB, or potentially lose him in the upcoming year.
This year, the skilled New Zealander is serving as Red Bull's reserve and test driver, yet remains a persistent challenge to the current race seat holders.
The recent boost in Sergio Perez's performance has turned the spotlight towards Ricciardo.
This season, Ricciardo, who drives for RB, has generally been outperformed by his teammate Yuki Tsunoda.
Ricciardo, who was once in the running to take Perez's spot at Red Bull, is now struggling to keep his current position for the 2025 season.
Alarmingly, Ricciardo has not secured a contract for the upcoming year, which could result in Lawson quickly filling his position.
Horner's suggestion that Red Bull might "loan" Lawson introduces another layer of complexity to the driver market.
Just three spots are left unconfirmed in the 2025 F1 driver roster.
One position is associated with Mercedes and is likely to be filled by Kimi Antonelli. Another spot is Ricciardo's at Red Bull, and there is also a vacancy at Sauber.
