Red Bull’s Perez Faces Scrutiny Over Costly Azerbaijan Clash with Ferrari’s Sainz
Sergio Perez cautioned about potential "repair costs" after being held responsible for a collision with Carlos Sainz
Sergio Perez reminded of Red Bull damage responsibilities
Mark Webber has held Sergio Perez responsible for the incident involving Carlos Sainz in Azerbaijan.
In the second to last lap of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, a collision between Red Bull's Perez and Ferrari's Sainz caused both drivers to exit the race early.
They were battling for a top-three position and ended up in a physical altercation when Perez couldn't get past Charles Leclerc to secure second place.
"Charles is showing strong defensive skills. Sergio has a weak exit from Turn 1," former F1 driver Webber commented for Channel 4.
“Carlos attempts to overtake his teammate and brakes on the outer side of the track. He drifts slightly wide.
"[Carlos] is taking a wide line and is slow to accelerate out of Turn 2. Charles has pulled ahead."
"[Sainz and Perez] are battling for the draft and make contact."
"It is a pitiful act, truly pitiful, with significant consequences!"
"Sergio is attempting to move into the draft. With this speed, the differences are minimal."
"This year's repair costs for Sergio are remarkably high."
Webber was questioned about whether Perez should take a greater share of the responsibility.
“He can see more of the Ferrari now,” he remarked.
“When you gaze into the mirror, it's unclear where he ought to be.”
"Sergio ought to have allowed him additional space to navigate that straightaway."
"He maintained excellent tire condition and completed the race swiftly."
Perez’s late race retirement deprived him of a rare opportunity to finish in front of Max Verstappen, who managed to secure fifth place despite difficulties.
A more significant consequence for Red Bull is that losing Perez's points helped McLaren surpass them and take the lead in the constructors' championship.
The officials examined the collision between Perez and Sainz but determined it was simply part of the race.
Sainz refuted claims of performing an "aggressive" move.
