Exclusive from Red Bull: Max Verstappen likened to Roger Federer and Michael Jordan
Pierre Wache from Red Bull discusses with Crash.net the unique qualities that set Max Verstappen apart.
Red Bull recognizes parallels between Max Verstappen and other legendary athletes, as he possesses abilities that are unmatched by anyone else.
Verstappen has secured three straight F1 drivers’ championships and is on track to claim a fourth title in the 2024 season, having triumphed in half of the 14 races held to date.
At just 26 years old, the Dutch driver is already seen as one of the top racers in history, having secured 61 grand prix wins, 40 pole positions, and 107 podium finishes in 199 races since his groundbreaking debut in 2015.
In an exclusive interview with Crash.net during the Belgian Grand Prix, Red Bull's technical director Pierre Wache compared Verstappen to legendary figures from various sports.
"He stands out because he embodies the qualities of the greatest athletes in every sport," Wache explained when questioned about what sets Verstappen apart.
"There are individuals who can accomplish things that no one else can. I don’t understand the how or the why, but that’s what he can do."
"He's comparable to Roger Federer or Michael Jordan—individuals who possess abilities that set them apart from everyone else."
"The driver holds the authority to manage and drive the car, possessing a unique ability that no one else has."
"It allows him to free up some mental space, enabling him to drive and simultaneously assess his needs and desires."
“He provides unique insights, as he drives the car to its maximum potential, unlike anyone else.”
Wache emphasized the importance of feedback from Verstappen and his teammate Sergio Perez in Red Bull’s efforts to enhance their vehicles.
"The input from both drivers plays a crucial role in our development and troubleshooting process, as creating a fast car is essentially straightforward," he stated.
"The challenge lies in designing a fast car that the driver can effectively utilize. If I were behind the wheel, I wouldn't be able to achieve its full potential."
The way this type of car is driven is so specialized that the driver's methods and usage are crucial.
