Red Bull’s Gamble Pays Off: The Far-Reaching Effects of Sergio Perez’s Extended F1 Contract
The unexpected length of Sergio Perez's contract extension with Red Bull in Formula 1 is causing a ripple effect. Crash.net examines the consequences of Perez's two-year deal with the team.
Sergio Perez has guaranteed his place in Formula 1 for the next two years, thanks to a significant vote of confidence from Red Bull, which has offered him a contract extension.
As the Canadian Grand Prix approaches this weekend, Red Bull has revealed their decision to renew the contract of the 34-year-old driver, securing his position alongside Max Verstappen for the upcoming two seasons.
What impact will this decision have on Red Bull and the other teams in the Formula 1 lineup?
Red Bull's confidence in Sergio Perez
This fresh contract is the strongest expression of Red Bull's confidence in Perez.
In a press statement, Red Bull's chief Christian Horner emphasized the crucial role of "continuity and stability" as they approach the regulatory changes in F1 slated for 2026. By extending a two-year contract to Perez, the team has secured just that.
This could likely be Perez's final contract in Formula 1, but it provides him with sought-after stability and significantly eases the pressure he faces.
With Perez free from the anxiety of being replaced and external distractions minimized, Red Bull is optimistic that he can perform at his highest potential.
A recent decline in performance sparked speculation about whether Perez was on the verge of another slump and if he is still the best option for Red Bull. However, the partnership between Perez and Verstappen has successfully clinched five of the last six available world championships and is on track to win two more this year.
Even though their Formula 1 competitors have been ramping up the pressure recently, Red Bull believes there is no need to alter their approach.
Carlos Sainz Faces Another Setback
With Red Bull opting to extend Perez's contract, Carlos Sainz finds himself with one less opportunity as he searches for a new team, following his replacement by Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari.
Carlos Sainz, once a member of the Red Bull junior program, was considered as a potential substitute for Sergio Perez at Red Bull. Team Principal Christian Horner acknowledged that Sainz was indeed a candidate for the position.
Despite his efforts, the Spanish driver has not secured a position with Red Bull. He must now evaluate his alternatives and make a crucial decision regarding his future career.
It was thought that Sainz was holding off on making any decisions about his future until Red Bull announced their driver lineup for 2025. Meanwhile, he was frequently mentioned in connection with teams such as Sauber/Audi and Williams.
One of these two teams now appears to be the frontrunner for Sainz, as Mercedes appears inclined to advance their highly-regarded young talent, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, from Formula 2.
Setbacks for Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda
In addition to Sainz, Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda have been passed over as well.
The duo race for Red Bull's affiliated team, RB, and have each been suggested as potential candidates to eventually take Perez's spot.
Daniel Ricciardo was considered Red Bull's top candidate to replace Sergio Perez if Perez underperformed this year. However, Ricciardo's performances in 2024 have shattered any hopes he had of making a dream comeback to the main team.
Teammate Tsunoda will find it hard to accept. The 24-year-old racer from Japan has shown excellent performance this season, displaying the steadiness and maturity that were missing when he first entered Formula 1.
Tsunoda has outperformed Ricciardo this year, and it's understandable that he might feel disappointed about not being in the running for a Red Bull F1 seat in 2025.
Given that there is no apparent path to the senior team until at least 2027, could Tsunoda now be contemplating other opportunities outside of the Red Bull organization?
Have Red Bull strengthened their efforts to retain Max Verstappen?
The extension of Perez's contract may be interpreted as a move to satisfy Verstappen and his significant entourage.
Although Max Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until 2028 and has consistently stated that he has no plans or wishes to depart, rumors about his future persist, fueled by Mercedes' open interest in him.
Verstappen maintains a good relationship with Perez and is confident in his ability to outperform him. With the appropriate vehicle, Verstappen is almost guaranteed to secure the championship title this year and in 2025. Over time, Perez appears to have embraced his role as Verstappen’s support driver.
Why would Red Bull jeopardize their team's stability by introducing an unpredictable element beside Verstappen? Sainz, driven to demonstrate his worth, or eager young talents like Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri, would join with something to prove.
Red Bull is fully aware of the strengths and capabilities of both Verstappen and Perez, making a driver change at this point an unnecessary and unwarranted gamble.
