Red Bull’s Dilemma: Ricciardo and Lawson Wait in the Wings as Perez Faces Performance Scrutiny
Daniel Ricciardo will be chosen if Red Bull decides to replace Sergio Perez. The team has alternatives for driver changes, which include Daniel Ricciardo and Liam Lawson.
Sources indicate that Daniel Ricciardo is considered the backup option for Red Bull if they decide to substitute the underperforming Sergio Perez.
Daniel Ricciardo's aspiration to rejoin Red Bull, which he revealed after coming back from his short break from Formula 1, is heavily dependent on how long the team is willing to stick with Sergio Perez.
Red Bull has announced that there will be no changes to the driver roster for both their main team and their sister team, RB, for the remainder of the season.
That explanation somewhat alleviated the significant pressure on Perez, who faced speculation of being dropped midseason due to his poor performance.
Should Perez continue to fall short of the points his employers expect despite receiving extra time and support, RB could consider substituting him with Ricciardo or reserve driver Liam Lawson.
According to Lawrence Barretto of F1.com, Ricciardo is expected to be chosen.
Ricciardo was let go by McLaren at the conclusion of 2022, but after an outstanding test session with Red Bull, he made a midseason comeback in 2023 with AlphaTauri.
He began this year with the aspiration of being reinstated as a full-time driver for Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen, but instead, Perez received a new contract.
Since signing the contract, Perez has struggled with his performance. He will keep his spot when the F1 summer break concludes this weekend at Zandvoort, but the duration of his tenure is uncertain.
Is Red Bull at risk of losing Liam Lawson?
Last year, the promising newcomer Lawson made a strong impression in Formula 1, stepping in for the injured Ricciardo at AlphaTauri.
His debut in F1 races sparked calls for him to keep the driving spot this year, but Red Bull chose not to do so.
However, Red Bull faces a deadline they are expected to miss, to offer Lawson a full-time racing position, or they might lose him forever.
Barretto noted that Red Bull is expected to secure a seat for Lawson in one of their teams for the 2025 season by September; otherwise, he will be free to join another team.
"Red Bull is keen on keeping him."
The wish to retain Lawson increases the stress on Perez.
Should his lackluster performance continue and lead to Ricciardo taking his place, Lawson is fully prepared to step into the Red Bull car.
However, Lawson is also closely pursuing Ricciardo, whose future remains unclear.
The experienced Australian racer remains without a contract for the 2025 season, whereas his teammate Yuki Tsunoda has secured his deal.
Before the summer break, Ricciardo candidly mentioned the possibility that he might be facing his last grand prix, depending on whether Red Bull decides to release him.
The risk persists unless he proves himself worthy of securing a new contract.
Barretto stated that if his performance declines, Lawson is the likely choice to take his place next season.
