**”Red Bull’s Christian Horner Faces Tough Questions on Sergio Perez’s Future Ahead of Crucial Team Meeting”**
Christian Horner faced inquiries regarding Sergio Perez's future before a crucial meeting today.
Christian Horner answered media questions, including those from Crash.net, concerning Sergio Perez's performance in Belgium.
Red Bull's team boss, Christian Horner, confesses that the team "didn't foresee" Sergio Perez's drop to seventh place at the Belgian Grand Prix in Formula 1.
Expectations were elevated for the embattled Mexican driver to secure a podium finish and reverse his recent decline in performance. This optimism was fueled by his best qualifying performance since the Chinese Grand Prix in April, which saw him starting second on the grid at Spa-Francorchamps.
Perez quickly lost his position to Lewis Hamilton at the start of the race and continued to drop back as it went on. He crossed the finish line in eighth place, three spots behind his teammate Max Verstappen. However, he was moved up to seventh place after George Russell was disqualified due to his car failing to meet the weight requirements during post-race inspections.
When Crash.net inquired whether Red Bull anticipated a stronger performance from Perez in Belgium, Horner responded, "Before the race, starting from the front row, we believed that finishing in third and fifth place was within reach."
"We managed to secure fifth place, but not third. Clearly, we need to analyze the data to comprehend why his speed dropped."
When asked if Red Bull was unhappy with Perez's performance, Horner responded, "Considering his starting position, we didn't expect him to end up in eighth place after starting second on the grid."
"Checo has faced a series of challenging races lately. What's particularly perplexing for us is that he began the season on a strong note, but his performance has since declined," Horner commented.
"He performed excellently during the qualifying yesterday. Clearly, we need to review and comprehend the problems faced during the race. We have the time to analyze these issues and collaborate with him on solutions."
Red Bull is scheduled to have a meeting today to talk about Perez's future with the team. Horner tried to minimize the importance of the meeting and emphasized that "nobody" wants to see a mid-season driver change happen.
He mentioned that they have a meeting scheduled for tomorrow, which is Monday. He clarified that the meeting isn't solely focused on Checo; there are various other issues to discuss, as they typically do before the summer break.
"Increasing Max's lead before the summer break will allow him to relax more. Our priority is the constructors' championship, and today we lost another seven or eight points in that race."
"It's crucial for us to change our performance after the break in Zandvoort."
When Crash.net asked about the timeframe Red Bull has set for Perez to improve his performance, Horner replied, “I believe he fully understands that we require both cars to be competitive.”
“This is similar to our situation at the start of the year, and it's where we must return.”
