Red Bull Urges Sergio Perez to Recover After Disastrous Canadian GP Weekend
Red Bull's team leader, Christian Horner, acknowledges that Sergio Perez must recover from a disappointing performance at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Red Bull Formula 1 team leader Christian Horner stated that Sergio Perez must recover following what he called a "terrible weekend" at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Perez's recent struggles persisted in Canada, where he faced a difficult weekend. Initially, he was eliminated in the first phase of qualifying for the second event in a row. During the race, he found it hard to advance and ultimately ended up crashing.
Before the weekend began, the Mexican driver secured a new two-year deal to remain with Red Bull, even though there have been doubts about his recent performance.
Horner acknowledged that Red Bull managed to escape unscathed in Montreal as Max Verstappen secured the win while their competitors stumbled, but he expressed confidence that Perez would make a comeback.
"It was a tough weekend for Checo, and we sustained some damage," Horner mentioned to Sky Sports. "He'll need to make a strong recovery in Barcelona."
"Fortunately, Ferrari had a terrible performance and failed to earn any points, which eased the pressure on us a bit. However, it’s crucial that both of our cars score points."
"Today we managed to pull it off, but we need Checo to return to his early-season form, starting from Barcelona onwards."
Horner commented: "Checo has a habit of proving resilient; just when it seems he's down, he manages to recover."
"He is a fierce competitor and has a strong personality; he takes losses harder than anyone else."
“He’ll be eager to return and demonstrate to everyone the level of performance we’ve seen from him in the initial four races of this year.”
Perez has now fallen to fifth position in the drivers' rankings, trailing teammate Verstappen by 87 points.
“It’s been challenging these past few weekends. I believe we need to come together, focus, and take lessons from our experiences," he commented.
"On Saturday, we encountered a problem that hindered our ability to achieve a better qualifying position. Fortunately, we quickly identified the issue right after the qualifying session, which is a good sign."
"Clearly, there's a lengthy year in front of us, and I am confident that we will reach our best performance."
Perez is facing more challenges at the Spanish Grand Prix after receiving a three-place grid penalty. This penalty was imposed because he drove his car in an unsafe condition in an effort to avoid a Safety Car during Sunday's race.
