Red Bull Urged to Heed Nyck de Vries Caution Before Fast-Tracking Liam Lawson
Red Bull has been cautioned against putting too much spotlight on Liam Lawson, with a reminder of Nyck de Vries' situation.
"Haven't we witnessed this repeatedly?"
Red Bull has been advised against placing Liam Lawson into their vehicle prematurely, using Nyck de Vries as an example.
Former Red Bull junior driver Nyck de Vries impressed during his Formula 1 debut when he was temporarily assigned to Williams to stand in for the ailing Alex Albon at the 2022 Italian Grand Prix. His performance, which saw him finish in ninth place, received high praise.
His first season as a full-time driver for AlphaTauri, Red Bull’s affiliated team, ended prematurely after only 10 races. Daniel Ricciardo took over his position permanently because of his lackluster performance.
Consequently, Red Bull has been urged to exercise caution with the highly-regarded Lawson.
On the F1 Nation podcast, Natalie Pinkham questioned, "You aren't seriously considering putting Liam directly into a Red Bull seat, are you?"
“He’d probably claim that he could manage it.”
"Isn't this something we've witnessed repeatedly? These young drivers are given too much attention. The system is unforgiving."
"If I were in charge of Lawson, I would start by placing him on the junior team and then advance him based on his performance."
"Consider Nyck de Vries. He performed exceptionally well when he stepped in for Alex Albon."
"He entered and received too much attention. Maintaining a high level of competitiveness is challenging and difficult."
Tom Clarkson responded, stating, "If Lawson joins forces with Max Verstappen, he won't appear impressive. No one looks impressive next to Verstappen."
However, ex-Formula 1 racer Alex Wurz had a different opinion: "Take the chance, just go for it. If you aim to compete with the top contenders, then dive in."
"You can only astonish someone, possibly with a stroke of good fortune…"
"Years ago, I filled in as a substitute driver at Silverstone and immediately made it to the podium."
"The following day, several teams reached out to offer me a contract. Benetton was the quickest to secure my signature. I understand that all it takes is one strong performance for this to occur."
“If fortune favors him and he finds himself on a circuit where the Red Bull performs well…”
"The issue lies in his tendency to overanalyze. He possesses excellent driving skills."
"A new wave of young talent is emerging, and he's leading the charge with his innovative abilities."
Last year, Lawson did an excellent job filling in for the injured Ricciardo while racing for AlphaTauri.
This year, he is being talked about again because Sergio Perez has been underperforming.
