Red Bull to Deliberate Sergio Perez’s Future Post-Belgian GP Amid Performance Concerns
Red Bull will evaluate Sergio Perez's future during a meeting scheduled for Monday, right after the Belgian Grand Prix, according to Lewis Larkam reporting from Spa.
Sergio Perez's fate will be a key topic of discussion during a Red Bull meeting scheduled for Monday, following this weekend's F1 Belgian Grand Prix.
Red Bull's motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko, has revealed that discussions about Perez's future will take place after this weekend's race at Spa Francorchamps.
There has been widespread speculation that the upcoming race in Belgium might be Sergio Perez's final appearance for Red Bull, following a series of disappointing results. Over the past seven races, the Mexican driver has accumulated 108 points fewer than his teammate, Max Verstappen, and has dropped to seventh place in the drivers' championship standings.
It is speculated that Perez's contract has a clause tied to his performance, allowing Red Bull to substitute him if he trails Verstappen by over 100 points by the summer break. This comes even though Perez inked a fresh contract in June. Currently, he is 141 points behind the defending world champion.
"Sergio understands that for us to win the constructors' championship, it's crucial to have both of our cars finishing ahead of McLaren whenever we can. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened in the recent races," Marko mentioned to ServusTV, which is owned by Red Bull, just before the qualifying session.
When questioned about Perez’s objective for the weekend, Marko responded: "Our aim is to secure victories in both the drivers' and constructors' championships, and we'll talk about the optimal strategy to accomplish that on Monday."
Perez recorded the third-quickest lap, trailing only Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. However, he will begin the race in second place because his teammate received a grid penalty. This outcome marks Perez’s strongest qualifying showing since the Chinese Grand Prix in April.
Following the qualifying round, Marko commented in another interview that the rainy session "demonstrated that Max is undoubtedly the top performer, particularly in such conditions."
Marko emphasized the importance of the fact that McLaren was not as competitive in wet conditions as they are likely to be in dry conditions. He noted that this improves their starting position and anticipates a thrilling race.
"It's fantastic to witness Sergio's progress. With the demotion, he'll be starting in the front row, and the situation is looking much more promising now."
Among the top contenders to replace Perez, should Red Bull decide to switch drivers mid-season, are Daniel Ricciardo and Yuki Tsunoda, both from the RB team, or Red Bull's reserve driver, Liam Lawson.
