Red Bull Refutes Brundle’s Claims as Verstappen’s Pace Sparks Championship Tension
Red Bull reacts to Martin Brundle's statement that "Max could have gone faster"
Martin Brundle believed that Max Verstappen was attempting "to push the factory to speed up"
Red Bull has refuted Martin Brundle's speculation that Max Verstappen deliberately reduced his speed during last weekend's race at Zandvoort.
Lando Norris secured a stunning win at the F1 Dutch Grand Prix, finishing 22 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen.
Sky Sports commentator Brundle speculated, "I would guess that Max wasn't driving as fast as he could."
"He was aware that he couldn't defeat Lando."
"Falling behind slightly like this… it will definitely prompt the factory to speed up, I’m certain of it."
Nevertheless, Helmut Marko from Red Bull has now expressed his opinion.
"Marko informed Speedweek that Martin Brundle's claim about Max intentionally driving at a slow pace is incorrect and cannot be stated."
"However, once he noticed that Lando had already taken off, he decided not to take any further chances."
Kicking off at Monza this weekend for the F1 Italian Grand Prix, Red Bull is aware that they need to respond to McLaren's strong performance.
The gap in the constructors' championship has narrowed to only 30 points, and Verstappen's lead over Norris in the drivers' standings is now 70 points.
Marko emphasized the need to restore the car's balance, stating, “We're putting in a lot of effort, but it's challenging to pinpoint the exact timing and extent of the new updates for the car."
"We need to regain our form, as we had a car that was outstanding and perfectly balanced up until the race in Shanghai or Suzuka."
“If we can achieve that once more, the drivers will regain their confidence, the car will have better traction, and the tire wear will be less severe.
"It's not merely about discovering new components. We require the same level of reliability in the car that we experienced at the season's start."
"The issue isn't related to tuning; instead, the new components have introduced a problem that has negatively affected the balance."
"We'll find out how things turn out in Monza; I'm clearly anticipating another strong performance from McLaren."
“I’m hopeful that we can achieve a more level playing field and strive for a win, as we have to acknowledge that we were outperformed at Zandvoort.”
“If the current trend persists, the championship is at risk.”
Marko expressed confidence that Red Bull will be able to resolve their recent issues.
The outcome of the constructors' championship could hinge on this.
