Red Bull Identifies Issues but Expected to Trail McLaren at Italian GP: Insights from David Croft and Karun Chandhok
Red Bull has pinpointed the problems but is expected to trail McLaren at the Italian Grand Prix. "I think they'll be slightly behind McLaren, but not by a significant margin."
David Croft, a commentator for Sky Sports F1, thinks that Red Bull will still trail McLaren, even though the current world champions have made advancements at the Italian Grand Prix.
The timesheets were not favorable for Red Bull during the second practice session, as Max Verstappen was unable to record a fast lap on the soft tires.
This placed Verstappen in 14th position, with his teammate Sergio Perez just behind him in 15th place.
Despite a challenging Dutch Grand Prix, where Verstappen trailed Lando Norris by more than 20 seconds, Croft remains firm that Red Bull has gradually begun improving the RB20.
"They have recognized the issues they were facing, but they are still making adjustments to improve performance now that they know what the problems are," Croft explained.
"I think they'll trail McLaren slightly, but not by a wide margin. I'm still uncertain if they'll surpass Ferrari."
Former Formula 1 driver Karun Chandhok believes it is still premature to determine Red Bull's position in the rankings, as neither Verstappen nor Perez have managed to record indicative lap times.
Chandhok commented that it's challenging to determine the frontrunner. He believes that the three teams observed today are very evenly matched based on the day's performance. He added that the situation might change tomorrow after the teams have had a chance to analyze data overnight using their simulators.
“I believe Verstappen is among the contenders. Perez didn’t complete a timed lap. His schedule was off, so we have no benchmark for Red Bull’s performance.”
Verstappen was pleased with Red Bull's speed during the first practice session, where they recorded the quickest lap.
The Dutch individual thinks there are various "intriguing" setup options for Verstappen to consider.
"We're aiming to accomplish a lot today," Verstappen remarked. "The start of FP2 wasn't ideal, but our performance during the long run improved. The tyres are wearing out rather quickly right now, which is intriguing and could impact the race. We have several promising strategies to consider for the car."
“We just need to clean it up a little. As you can see, many cars are very close in performance. Hopefully, we can be competitive in that group.”
