Red Bull Fast-Tracks Major RB20 Upgrades for Crucial Hungarian GP Amid Heated F1 Rivalries
Red Bull elaborates on the accelerated RB20 Formula 1 car enhancements introduced in Hungary
Red Bull announced that their most significant upgrade of the 2024 F1 season was expedited for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
According to Lewis Larkam reporting from Budapest, Red Bull has accelerated the implementation of their upgrade package for this weekend's F1 Hungarian Grand Prix.
The current world champions have unveiled their most significant update of the season for their RB20 vehicle at the Hungaroring. The upgrade includes a modified engine cover, a new front wing, and changes to the aerodynamic components at both the front and rear of the car.
Red Bull has been under significant pressure from their competitors in the latest races, as Mercedes secured consecutive wins in Austria and Britain, while McLaren also proved to be strong contenders.
Red Bull's chief engineer, Paul Monaghan, clarified that the situation is influenced by both temperature and the characteristics of the track. "We'll have to wait and see how things develop here," he said. "If the lap times are relatively slow, we may need to reassess our approach."
"Our conviction is to move ahead with this plan. The team at the factory has performed exceptionally well, allowing us to complete it ahead of schedule. We aim to utilize it effectively."
Monaghan stated, "We examined how soon we could implement this, and this is the earliest possible time."
"We're surrounded by competitors, right? So it's crucial for us to perform at our best, and this marks a minor yet important progress. Apart from one component, the upgrades have been implemented on both vehicles, serving as a significant gesture of gratitude to everyone involved in reaching this stage."
Max Verstappen seemed to increase the stakes for Red Bull, stating to the press on Thursday that he considers this weekend’s race to be “crucial” for the team. He also expressed his hope that it will result in “significant improvements in lap time.”
Monaghan stated that the incoming data for this race should prove to be beneficial for them.
"We tend to evaluate our progress by comparing it to what others have achieved, don't we? We've made the most significant advancement we could. Whether it's sufficient or not will be determined on Sunday afternoon. That's essentially how we gauge it."
Both vehicles will feature identical update packages, except for the modified engine cover found solely on Verstappen’s car. Sergio Perez, his teammate, will continue using the previous version.
When questioned about whether managing two distinct cooling specifications would increase the workload for Red Bull, Monaghan responded, “More work? Not necessarily, as we already handle both cars.”
"The fact that it has a slightly different shape isn’t really significant. It won’t alter our approach or how we aim to optimize it."
"We aim to have it resolved by, I would estimate, Zandvoort."
