Red Bull Alarmed by Lando Norris’s Commanding Dutch GP Victory; McLaren Emerges as Serious Title Threat
Red Bull expresses concern over Lando Norris and McLaren's strong performance at the Dutch Grand Prix, calling it "alarming" and "scary."
Red Bull acknowledges that Lando Norris’s commanding win at the Dutch Grand Prix raises concerns about their aspirations to clinch both F1 world championships.
Norris made a comeback after a shaky beginning, overtaking Max Verstappen of Red Bull, and then went on to secure a decisive second victory of the season with his enhanced McLaren, finishing nearly 23 seconds ahead.
Norris's recent performance has reduced Verstappen's advantage in the drivers' championship to 70 points. Meanwhile, McLaren has narrowed the gap to Red Bull in the constructors' standings to just 30 points, with nine races remaining.
Following the race, Red Bull's motorsport advisor Helmut Marko expressed to Autosport that Norris's strong performance at Zandvoort was "concerning" and emphasized his belief that McLaren poses a significant challenge for both world championships this year.
Max Verstappen hasn't secured a win in his last five races, with his most recent triumph being at the Spanish Grand Prix in June.
"The Dutchman mentioned that the weekend overall was quite disappointing and emphasized the need to recognize that."
"However, recent races haven't been particularly impressive. So, to some extent, this was already somewhat concerning."
"We understand there's no reason to be alarmed. Our focus is on making things better, and that's our current effort. However, Formula 1 is quite complex."
Sergio Perez, who drives for Red Bull and ended up in sixth place, expressed his worries about McLaren’s incredible speed, calling it “frightening”.
Perez expressed to the official F1 channel that the weekend had been consistently strong overall. However, he admitted feeling quite let down by the car's performance during the race.
"We didn't anticipate this outcome. I expected us to be much closer to McLaren. Ferrari's performance was a huge shock, and McLaren also surprised us. There's a lot we need to analyze."
"It’s been a beneficial weekend for the team as we tested various specifications between Max and me, gathering a lot of data. Hopefully, we can soon combine everything into the optimal setup."
"Monza is going to be a completely different circuit. However, it was quite alarming to witness McLaren's performance today."
