Private School Fees Surge as Labour’s New VAT Policy Takes Effect

Starting today, parents who enroll their children in private schools might see an increase in tuition fees due to the implementation of the government's new VAT policy.
On Wednesday, the Labour Party eliminated the VAT exemption and the relief on business rates previously afforded to private schools, a move that may compel these institutions to increase tuition fees to manage the additional costs.
The policy has led to a complete overhaul for many, and it is believed that it has also resulted in the displacement of thousands of children.
Officials state that the new policy is expected to generate approximately £1.5 billion in revenue in 2025, with projections increasing to £1.8 billion by 2029. This influx of funds will be used to hire 6,500 additional teachers.
The policy has encountered significant opposition, particularly from critics on the Opposition benches. Shadow Education Secretary Laura Trott has argued that the policy will not benefit state schools in any way.

Last week, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson came under fire for implying that middle class families back the tax hike.
She argued that they can "hardly afford" to send their children to private schools anymore, and described herself as the "representative of ambitious middle-class parents."
She explained to The Sunday Times that this widespread backing for our proposal to eliminate the tax advantages private schools receive and channel those funds into public education is due to this reason.
Ms. Phillipson noted that the typical annual fees for private schools have increased to £18,000.

She further noted, "Parents who are middle class professionals and grappling with housing expenses simply can't manage those high fees, and they are in search of excellent public schools."
Shadow Foreign Secretary Priti Patel criticized the comments as further deceit by the socialist government, accusing it of failing to fulfill its campaign commitments.
A representative for Sir Keir Starmer stated that the VAT policy would enable the Labour Party to enhance quality in public services.
The representative emphasized that the vast majority, 94%, of students are enrolled in public schools as opposed to private institutions.

2028 Vision: National Care Service’s Long Road Ahead Amid Urgent Calls for Faster Action
Initial Move Toward a National Care Service Anticipated by 2028
The leader of the King's Fund charity has expressed concerns that waiting until 2028 for the implementation of recommendations is excessively delayed for individuals requiring social care.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting has refuted claims that the government is delaying changes to social care, despite accusations that significant improvements to the system could take years to implement.
Government officials have initiated an independent panel, headed by Baroness Casey, aimed at revolutionizing social care. However, the final phase of this two-part commission will not deliver its ultimate suggestions for England until the close of 2028.
The initial stage is set to present its findings to Sir Keir Starmer by mid-2026, focusing on current challenges in social care and proposing reforms for the coming years. A subsequent stage, anticipated around two years later, will suggest strategies for more enduring changes.
The assessment, set to commence in April, is a component of a broader initiative aimed at aiding the sector. This includes additional financial support for elderly and disabled individuals to carry out modifications in their homes, and also provides training for caregivers to conduct health assessments for patients at their residences.
The statement made on Friday also signifies the initial move towards establishing a National Care Service, a commitment made by the Labour Party in their manifesto for the general election.
When questioned by journalists during his visit to Carlisle about whether officials were delaying the reforms, Mr. Streeting responded, "This administration is committed to addressing the longstanding crisis in social care, a problem that has developed over decades."
"This is why, following the general election, we have enacted legislation for the inaugural fair pay agreements, implemented the most significant expansion of the carer's allowance since the 1970s, and are providing substantial increases in social care funding – with particular allocations for the disabled facilities grant."
He continued, "However, much remains to be accomplished. To interrupt the continuous pattern of setbacks experienced under various administrations—be it Labour, Liberal Democrats, Conservatives, or SNP—the optimal approach would be to establish an independent commission. This body would unite political factions, ensuring we devise a strategy that extends beyond the immediate future and covers the next thirty years."
Professor Martin Green, who heads Care England, emphasized that delaying until 2028 is simply not feasible.
He mentioned that although the government's evaluation recognized "the decade-long crisis in social care," there was a danger of it merely "ending up as another report that collects dust as the sector deteriorates."
"He further stated that the commission would only reaffirm existing knowledge, questioning how many additional reports are needed before decisive measures are implemented."
"The damage inflicted by the government's lack of action is profound, and if immediate measures are not taken, the impact on those reliant on care services will be irreversible.
"Postponing until 2028 is unacceptable. Those currently receiving care need immediate intervention – their survival hinges on immediate measures."
Sarah Woolnough, the chief executive of The King's Fund, expressed her approval of the announcement but emphasized the need for the government to hasten its implementation.
The Labour Party had 14 years to formulate a plan for social care—why are they now requesting an additional three years?
Political correspondent
Various administrations have attempted and been unsuccessful in addressing the long-standing issue of reforming social care.
Revamping the industry could have a profound impact, benefiting not only the patients and workforce but also aiding local governments burdened with rising costs and the critically strained NHS, which currently compensates for the deficiencies.
The benefits are clear, yet the political risks are significant and overshadow the matter, as past efforts have notably resulted in defeat.
A significant moment occurred when Theresa May tried to alter the funding scheme, famously labeled as "the dementia tax" throughout an election period, an effort that ultimately disrupted and irreparably harmed her time in office.
Labour, considering this and other shelved initiatives, has made a move today to secure both time and political protection.
The declaration that the Independent Commission will deliver its findings in 2028 provides them with several years to develop solutions and secure the necessary funding.
By enlisting Baroness Casey, a reformer known for her political neutrality and impressive track record, the authorities aim to foster bipartisan support and sidestep the contentious criticisms that often derail policies.
This raises the clear critique that after 14 years as the opposition, Sir Keir Starmer and his colleagues should already have a plan for social care. Why, then, the need for an additional three years?
They must now demonstrate that this extended time for consideration is truly beneficial, and not merely an age-old political strategy of delaying action.
Last summer, Chancellor Rachel Reeves declared that she would halt the planned reforms on adult social care charges, previously postponed by the former government, as part of an effort to address a £22 billion deficit in the public finances.
The proposal was to set a maximum limit of £86,000 on care expenses starting this October. Once an individual's care expenses surpassed this limit, local governments would cover the additional costs.
The criteria for eligibility for certain council assistance would have been raised, increasing the asset threshold from the current £23,250 to £100,000 before one exceeds the cap.
Discover additional coverage from Sky News: The strange tale of an impostor caregiver. Social care services for numerous individuals at risk.
Shadow health and social care secretary Edward Argar commented that Labour's actions have further complicated the work of social care providers.
"He stated that following Rachel Reeves' withdrawal from their commitment to implement a cap on social care costs, Labour has increased the burden on social care providers by imposing the employer NICs jobs tax on social care workers, further complicating their work."
"We are committed to actively participating in the development of essential, long-term reforms in social care. However, it is quite disheartening that after 14 years as the opposition, the Labour Party still lacks a concrete strategy for social care."
In a conversation with Sky News today, Health Minister Andrew Gwynne recognized the concerns regarding how long significant reforms would take to be enacted, but refuted claims of current stagnation.

He pointed out that all political parties were implicated, noting how the Tories criticized Gordon Brown's efforts to reform social care in 2010, calling it the "death tax", and how Theresa May faced allegations of attempting to implement a "dementia tax" when she suggested a cap on social care expenses.
Mr. Gwynne highlighted that more financial resources have been allocated to the Disabled Facilities Grant, enabling individuals to request funds for modifications like door enlargement, access enhancement, ramp or stairlift installation, or constructing additions.
This financial year will see an additional £86 million injection, supplementing the previously announced £86 million allocated in the budget for the upcoming financial year, elevating the yearly total to £711 million.
Government officials estimate that approximately 7,800 additional seniors and individuals with disabilities could stand to benefit.

Political Tug-of-War: Kemi Badenoch’s Call for Inquiry Mirrors Farage’s Stance, Draws Elon Musk into UK Political Fray
Is Kemi Badenoch trying to match Nigel Farage's pace while aligning with Elon Musk's strategies?
Tory chief Kemi Badenoch has demanded a nationwide investigation into the widespread grooming crises in various UK towns and cities, claiming such an inquiry has been "long overdue."

Thursday, January 2, 2025, 9:
This morning, Kemi Badenoch demanded a comprehensive national investigation into what she labeled the "rape gangs scandal," aiming to establish ethical supremacy concerning this horrific blot on the nation's recent history.
Yet, rather than capitalizing on a political advantage, she appears to be hastily trying to match Nigel Farage's pace, while seemingly following Elon Musk's lead.
Mr. Musk dedicated the entire night to sharing provocative posts on X, implying that Labour safeguarding minister Jess Phillips deserves incarceration for rejecting Oldham Council's plea for a government-supported public inquiry into the matter. Ms. Phillips had contended that it would be more appropriate for the inquiry to be organized at a local level.
The wealthy U.S. entrepreneur expressed his backing for Reform UK MP Rupert Lowe's demand for an investigation, while also encouraging his followers to "Vote Reform. It's the only Hope."
Following the previous national vote, the Conservative Party has faced increasing scrutiny and pressure from Mr. Farage's party, a situation underscored by the recent dispute regarding party membership numbers.

Labour Schism: 20 Councillors Defect in Broxtowe, Forming Independents in Rebuke to Starmer’s Leadership
Labour's grip on the council slips as 20 councillors resign, criticizing Sir Keir Starmer
The recently established Broxtowe Independents declared "with a heavy heart" their inability to remain part of a party that, in their view, has forsaken its core Labour principles under the leadership of Sir Keir Starmer.
Politics correspondent @FaithLRidler
Thursday, January 2, 2025, 10:
Sir Keir Starmer has seen Broxtowe Borough Council slip from his grasp, mere months ahead of the local elections, following the resignation of 20 councillors who harshly criticized the prime minister as they left the Labour Party.
The council representatives from Nottinghamshire who have resigned from their party will now operate under the name Broxtowe Independents, citing two years of "bitterness and betrayal" during Sir Keir's leadership of the Labour Party.
Council leader Milan Radulovic spearheaded the abrupt departure of the group.
In the May 2023 local elections, Labour took back control of Broxtowe Borough Council, which had previously been under no overall control.
One of the councillors who switched allegiance was also a representative on Nottinghamshire County Council, resulting in Labour losing its status as the main opposition party there.
The recently established Broxtowe Independents have declared, "with great regret," that they can "no longer remain in a party that has forsaken traditional Labour values under the leadership of Sir Keir Starmer."
In a conversation with Sky News, Mr. Radulovic mentioned that the decisive factor for his frustration was the "problem with preventing 10 of our members from running for county council positions," a move that the council leader earlier termed as a "centrist purge."

He expressed his desire for the departure to serve as an alert for the Labour Party, impacting its structure at local and national scales.
Mr. Radulovic stated that the party will definitely experience significant defeats in the upcoming local elections.
"He announced that the Independents in Broxtowe will be fielding candidates in each ward, eager to see how their approach fares with voters, viewing it as a genuine measure of democratic engagement."
However, the six continuing Labour councillors in the region stated that the defections will not impact their dedication.
They stated: "Alongside our Labour colleagues, including MPs Juliet Campbell and Alex Norris, we are committed to transforming Broxtowe into a healthier, greener, safer, and more prosperous community for all, as we initiate changes under the new Labour administration."
In a statement released on Thursday, the group of 20 Broxtowe Independents expressed that the present-day Labour Party does not represent the ideals they once advocated for.
Critics have taken issue with Sir Keir's administration for reducing the winter fuel allowance, raising bus ticket prices, and maintaining the two-child limit on benefits for families facing financial difficulties.
"They were urged to cast their ballots for transformation, yet the outcome was merely a continuation of previous policies—targeting the weakest segments to safeguard the privileges of the affluent and influential," they stated.
In Broxtowe, we appealed to the party to reconsider the winter fuel subsidy that impacted our community members. What was their reaction? They harshly prevented 10 of our committed council members from running as candidates in the county council for the upcoming May 2025 local elections. We refuse to ignore the needs of Broxtowe's citizens or support unjust actions.

Nick Clegg to Depart Meta, Joel Kaplan Steps Up as New Global Affairs President Amid Political Shifts
Nick Clegg will leave his position at Meta, passing the baton to notable Republican Joel Kaplan
Sir Nick plans to pursue "new adventures" following a transitional period with Mr. Kaplan.
Friday, January 3, 2025, 3:
Ex-deputy Prime Minister Sir Nick Clegg has announced his resignation from his position at Meta, the company that owns Facebook.
He expressed that it was the appropriate moment for him to step down as president of global affairs.
As Donald Trump's term nears its conclusion, Joel Kaplan, who previously served as the Deputy Chief of Staff in the George W. Bush administration from 2006 to 2009, is set to succeed him.
Sir Nick stated: "With the start of a new year, I believe now is the appropriate moment for me to step down from my position as president of global affairs at Meta.
"It has certainly been the journey of a lifetime!"
The former leader of the Liberal Democrats was appointed as Meta's Vice-President for Global Affairs and Communications in 2018, following his departure from Parliament the previous year.
In response to inquiries about the possibility of Sir Nick assuming a prominent position in the Liberal Democrats after his exit from Meta, the party’s leader, Sir Ed Davey, conveyed to Sky News, "I've only just read Nick's statement. It's really his decision to make. Naturally, I hope all the best for him and his family moving forward."

Elon Musk Faces Criticism from UK Health Secretary Over ‘Misjudged’ Grooming Gang Comments; Urged to Aid in Online Child Protection Efforts
Wes Streeting Criticizes Elon Musk's Remarks on UK Grooming Gangs as 'Misjudged' and 'Misinformed'
The Health Secretary also encourages the tech mogul to take action and assist the government in addressing online child abuse.
Political correspondent @alexrogerssky
Friday, January 3, 2025, 2:
The Health Secretary has criticized Elon Musk for making comments that were "ill-informed" and "poorly assessed" regarding the UK government's handling of grooming gangs.
Wes Streeting has called on the tech mogul and owner of X to actively engage and assist the government in addressing online child sexual abuse and exploitation.
Mr. Streeting responded to inquiries regarding Mr. Musk's growing involvement in UK politics, noting that he is also set to become the efficiency tsar for US President-elect Donald Trump later this month.
Elon Musk, who has expressed support for Reform UK on the platform X and is said to be thinking about contributing financially to Nigel Farage's party, has voiced his disapproval of how the government managed cases of child sexual exploitation in various towns and cities over ten years ago.
He has accused Sir Keir Starmer of not successfully prosecuting "rape gangs" during his tenure at the head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). In 2013, Sir Keir implemented revised protocols regarding the treatment of child sexual abuse victims and the formulation and presentation of cases in court.
Mr. Musk contended that Minister for Safeguarding Jess Phillips should be incarcerated following her dismissal of Oldham Council's pleas for a national investigation into child sexual exploitation cases in the area.
When questioned by journalists about whether Mr. Musk's remarks were detrimental, Mr. Streeting responded: "I believe some of the critiques Elon Musk has offered are misguided and definitely poorly informed."
"We're open to collaborating with Elon Musk. I believe he has a significant part to play through his social media platform in assisting us and other nations to address this critical problem. So if he's ready to get involved and put in the effort, we would certainly welcome his participation."
The health secretary also expressed his belief that "political correctness sometimes hindered efforts to confront those responsible for committing these grave offenses."
He emphasized, "We won't allow that to occur."
Explaining her decision to turn down the proposal for an investigation into Oldham, Ms. Phillips, the Labour representative for Birmingham Yardley, expressed that although she acknowledges the "strong emotions" surrounding the issue, she holds the view that it is the responsibility of "Oldham Council itself to initiate a local inquiry into child sexual exploitation, rather than having the government step in."
In a message on X, Mr. Musk alleged, "the genuine cause [Ms. Phillips] is avoiding probing into the rape gangs is clearly because it would result in pointing fingers at Keir Starmer (who was the chief of the CPS then)."
Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the Conservative Party, has demanded a countrywide investigation into the grooming scandal, while opposition ministers have penned a letter to Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, urging her to reconsider the choice not to initiate a nationwide inquiry into Oldham.
The letter stated that only a formal legal investigation could properly address the widespread scope of these offenses and issues, and also examine if the police, the Crown Prosecution Service, and the local council neglected or possibly concealed the reports.
In 2002, Amanda Solloway, who was serving as the Conservative safeguarding minister at the time, penned a letter to Oldham Council. This correspondence later came to light, revealing that she had dismissed an earlier plea from the council for the establishment of a public inquiry by the government.
Similarly to Ms. Phillips, Ms. Solloway advocated for an inquiry that would be conducted at the local level.
In its concluding report released in 2022, the Independent Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse characterized child sexual abuse as a widespread crisis, impacting tens of thousands with its destructive consequences.
Heading the investigation was Professor Alexis Jay, known for revealing the extent of child sexual exploitation in Rotherham. The inquiry focused on abuse perpetrated by organized groups, sparked by numerous convictions for sexual offenses against children throughout the UK from 2010 to 2014.

The text suggests that organizations dealing with children should be legally mandated to report any suspicions of child sexual abuse.
In November of the previous year, Prof Jay expressed her frustration over the fact that, more than two years following the conclusion of the inquiry, not one of the 20 suggested recommendations had been put into action.
Mr. Streeting stated that the government is fully dedicated to adopting all the suggestions from Professor Jay's report.
"He affirmed the government's dedication to putting into action the findings from the investigation into child sexual abuse."
"We will completely follow through. We will proceed with the task at hand."

End of an Era: UK Government Moves to Abolish Hereditary Peers Amidst Constitutional Clash
"An assault on the constitution": The final hereditary peers.
Sir Keir Starmer has declared the hereditary right to a seat in the Lords as "unjustifiable," and his administration has initiated steps to abolish it.
Political reporter @serenabarksing
Thursday, January 2, 2025, 5:
For generations, a peculiar custom had been inactive within our democratic system.
Several aristocrats have gained seats in parliament solely due to their lineage. In the House of Lords, 92 positions are reserved for male successors from certain families, and presently, 88 of these men occupy seats in this legislative body, participating in the voting on laws.
The origins of this particular anomaly in our parliamentary system are unclear, but Sir Keir Starmer's administration is making efforts to put a stop to it.
The prime minister has declared the hereditary right to occupy a seat in the upper house as "indefensible," and his administration has initiated steps to permanently abolish the inclusion of hereditary peers.
This change will require individuals holding hereditary titles to participate in a system that could lead to their removal from positions they were once guaranteed for life.

We are introduced to the Earl of Devon, holder of one of the most ancient inherited titles.

His ancestral lineage extends back to the Saxon era, though his privilege to occupy a seat in the House of Lords was established later – he claims it was conferred in 1142 as a reward for backing the initial female ruler, Empress Matilda.
He has held the title of the 38th Earl of Devon to date and is the most recent hereditary member to serve in the Lords.
His estate in Devon connects him with the locals he serves, which is a key factor in his belief that he contributes significantly to parliament.
He contends that he and his colleagues possess a unique set of life experiences that differ from those of political appointees.
He claims that the UK features more extensive regional representation and possesses a profound comprehension of the historical constitutional functions of parliament, rooted in the transmission of knowledge across generations.
"He believes the contribution of hereditary peers in the House of Lords is outstanding," he states.
He fervently supports the notion of service that he and his colleagues aim to achieve, but he also believes that there is a societal purpose and value in the hereditary principle, with the monarch being the prime example of this.
"He suggests that while Keir Starmer may not be a republican, it does raise the question: if the hereditary peers are removed, could the monarchy be next?"
In comparison, Lord Strathclyde holds one of the most recently established hereditary titles.
He has been an active participant in the House of Lords and has also held high-ranking positions in past Conservative administrations.
He thinks the government's recent action is entirely motivated by politics.
"He believes the underlying motive for the government's desire to eliminate them is largely because they do not belong to the Labour Party."
"This is essentially an aggressive usurpation of constitutional norms. It enables the prime minister to eliminate political adversaries and dictate admissions into the House of Lords."
"I assure you that once this bill is passed and enacted, there will be no additional changes to the House of Lords, regardless of any claims by ministers."
Indeed, more than fifty percent of the hereditary peers align with the Conservative Party, while remarkably, only four identify as members of the Labour Party.
However, eliminating the hereditary peers does not significantly alter the overall makeup of the House of Lords.

The House of Lords is currently composed of 70% male members. The removal of these peers would only decrease this percentage by 3%. Additionally, the overall proportion of Conservative peers in the House would decrease by just 2% should all hereditary peers depart suddenly.
Widespread Change
Discussions on reform have been ongoing since the 18th century, particularly focusing on limiting the growing size of the chamber, which currently exceeds 800 members.
Yet, even with continual pledges for change from various administrations, the House has only increased in size.
Aristocratic members argue that following the initial phase of reform, the government will likely lose interest in pursuing further modernization of the upper house.
In 1999, Blair reduced the number of hereditary peers, having earlier committed to eliminating them entirely.
While 650 left, an agreement was made for 92 to stay on, with succession plans through a peculiar byelection system allowing only hereditary peers to replace those who passed away or retired.
Baroness Smith, the current leader of the Lords, has criticized the elections as an odd and nearly disgraceful aspect of our democratic process. She likened them to the fictional Dunny-on-the-Wold election depicted in Blackadder, where a single voter constitutes the entire electorate.

The government has accelerated its efforts to eliminate these peerages, but it's also apparent that Labour has scaled back its commitments to more extensive reforms in the Lords.
Before the election, there was talk of completely eliminating the upper house.
In their platform, the party adjusted their position to diminish the size of the Lords by implementing a retirement age, however, this proposal was omitted from the King's speech and the government has not provided any schedule for achieving these goals.
Baroness Smith maintains that these are ongoing commitments, with the government actively exploring ways to fulfill them. However, the process appears to be progressing more slowly than the initial phase of phasing out hereditary peers, who are expected to permanently retire their traditional garments after this parliamentary session concludes.

UK Government Intensifies Crackdown on People Smuggling with New Travel and Social Media Restrictions Amid Rising Channel Crossings
Individuals suspected of human trafficking could be subject to travel restrictions and limitations on their use of social media platforms, following the implementation of stricter regulations. This decision follows recent statistics indicating that 36,816 migrants made the journey across the English Channel to the UK in 2024, marking a 25% rise compared to the previous year.
Thursday, January 2, 2025, 1:
Under proposed government measures, individuals suspected of human trafficking could be subject to travel restrictions and limitations on their use of mobile phones and social media platforms.
The Home Office stated that court orders might be implemented to limit the actions of individuals suspected of coordinating small boat journeys across the Channel. This could include prohibitions on utilizing laptops, mobile phones, and social media platforms.
The most recent data reveals that in 2024, there were 36,816 migrant crossings of the English Channel into the UK, marking a 25% rise from the 29,437 individuals who made the journey in small boats in 2023.
The government has declared its unwavering commitment to completely disrupt the operations of human trafficking networks.
The government currently has the authority to request Serious Crime Prevention Orders (SCPOs) to limit the actions of individuals engaged in organized immigration crime. However, it is looking to expand these measures by proposing the introduction of new "interim" SCPOs. These would allow for "immediate" constraints to be imposed on suspects while the courts deliberate on the issuance of a full order.

"Labour no longer has command over our border security."
In 2024, the count of individuals who successfully crossed the Channel reached the second-highest level since record-keeping started in 2018. Despite this, the figure represents a 20% decrease from the peak of 45,774 arrivals recorded in 2022.
