Pramac Yamaha’s Future: Miguel Oliveira Emerges as Top Contender Amid Di Giannantonio’s VR46 Ducati Deal
Miguel Oliveira has the potential to be an excellent addition to the Pramac Yamaha team.
"Miguel Oliveira has secured numerous race victories. This makes him a strong candidate for the Pramac project."
Fabio di Giannantonio's anticipated agreement with VR46 Ducati suggests he will not be considered for the position to spearhead the new Pramac Yamaha MotoGP team in 2025.
Yamaha's factory team standout, Fabio Quartararo, commended 'Diggia' just before the Sachsenring event. He highlighted the Italian rider, as well as newcomers like Sergio Garcia and Alonso Lopez, as his top picks for the new factory-supported Pramac positions.
Expressing his gratitude to Quartararo for his remarks, di Giannantonio clarified that he has multiple strategies for 2025, including a primary, secondary, and even tertiary plan. It quickly emerged that his main objective is to stay with VR46 while being promoted to a factory-spec motorcycle and securing a direct contract with Ducati.
"Continuing with this project is definitely Plan A," di Giannantonio remarked during the German MotoGP. "However, if for some reason this isn't possible, or if we don't have the right setup with this team, I have Plan B and Plan C ready. Nevertheless, the main objective is to stay with VR46. We'll be discussing this in the coming weeks."
Ducati's CEO, Claudio Domenicali, mentioned to Sky Italia that they are nearing a deal. He expressed their admiration for Diggia and stated that they are collaborating with VR46 to achieve this objective. Domenicali noted Diggia's significant development and shared that they would be pleased to retain him, adding that they are making good progress.
If the deal between di Giannantonio and Ducati is finalized, Pramac and Yamaha will need to secure a different experienced rider.
The official lineup of MotoGP racers with confirmed wins for the 2025 season includes Alex Rins with six victories, Miguel Oliveira with five, Jack Miller with four, Franco Morbidelli with three, and Joan Mir with one win and one MotoGP championship title.
If Rins remains with the official Yamaha team, Morbidelli will not get back on an M1, and Joan Mir finalizes his main goal of securing a new contract with Repsol Honda, the options are narrowed down to Oliveira or Miller.
Although Miller previously raced for Pramac and maintains a positive relationship with the team, Oliveira marked a strong comeback by securing a front-row start and a podium finish in the Sprint race for Trackhouse Aprilia in Germany.
Portuguese rider has the support of Quartararo, who considers him one of his closest friends in MotoGP. Quartararo praises his performance, particularly at Sachsenring, and acknowledges his significant experience in the sport.
"He has already secured numerous victories, proving he can be an excellent addition to the [Pramac] team."
In the meantime, the ex-KTM factory rider stayed silent about his upcoming plans.
Oliveira commented at Sachsenring, expressing the importance of anticipating future developments and comparing them to current resources. He mentioned his desire to make the most of the remaining weekend before considering future plans.
When questioned about the reasons behind his dramatic improvement in performance on the RS-GP24 in Germany, Oliveira, who also secured a sixth place finish and was the highest-ranking non-Ducati rider in the grand prix, explained:
"It feels like everything is coming together perfectly – from the circuit itself to the strategy we employed this weekend. We focused on fine-tuning the suspension and electronics without making too many adjustments to the bike. This approach has allowed me to fully capitalize on my riding technique."
"Additionally, with Aleix not competing, we have additional factory personnel from Aprilia examining our work. I wouldn't say this is the primary reason, but it certainly provides some assistance."
Oliveira has moved up to 13th place in the world championship standings, while Miller holds the 16th spot for Red Bull KTM.
