He is fulfilling a campaign pledge to tackle the roughly trillion-dollar trade deficit—the gap between the value of America's exports and its imports—which he views as a burden on American employment, by vowing to impose import duties on countries that apply tariffs or VAT on US exports.
He intends to implement tariffs as a means of "external revenue generation," aiming to reduce the US deficit while also making imports more expensive compared to domestic goods, according to the strategy.

Firstly, the United States maintains a trade surplus with the United Kingdom – interestingly, due to a statistical anomaly, the UK also believes it has a surplus. Furthermore, Brexit has positioned the UK outside of the European Union, theoretically enabling it to be more flexible.
In 2021, following negotiations led by former trade secretary Liz Truss, the UK significantly reduced tariffs on a limited number of American products. This agreement eliminated import duties on items like denim and motorcycles entering the UK, and on cashmere and Scotch whisky exported to the US.
However, VAT is applied to imports, and Mr. Trump's warning to consider the sales tax as a substitute for a tariff is likely to concern British exporters.

Im Dezember 2023 erhielt Georgien den Status eines Anwärters auf den Beitritt zur Europäischen Union.
