Pierre Gasly Urges Reversal of ‘Unfair’ F1 Ban on Kevin Magnussen After Monza Incident
Pierre Gasly argues that the Formula 1 suspension of Kevin Magnussen is unjust and should be lifted.
Pierre Gasly has urged F1's stewards to overturn the penalty given to Kevin Magnussen after their minor collision at the Italian Grand Prix.
Haas' racer Magnussen is expected to skip the upcoming race in Baku, becoming the first Formula 1 driver ever to accumulate 12 penalty points on his license within a year. The Danish driver received a 10-second time penalty and two penalty points for an incident involving Gasly during Sunday's competition at Monza.
However, the Alpine driver feels that Magnussen did not deserve a penalty and is prepared to talk to the stewards to attempt to have the decision reversed.
Pierre Gasly mentioned that their performance was underwhelming. He expressed that their pace was consistently slow throughout the afternoon. He emphasized the need for improvement, as he had anticipated better potential in the race, which turned out to be more challenging than expected.
A source mentioned that he received a 10-second penalty. I'm somewhat taken aback by this since it seemed like a fair attempt, with some minor wheel-to-wheel contact, and ultimately, it didn't cause me any significant time loss. I'm rather surprised.
"I really hope they can change their decision because it would be extremely unfair otherwise. I'm willing to talk to the stewards about it and see what can be done. It would feel very unjust for the nature of the incident."
Magnussen, who earned a point in Monza by securing 10th place, expressed that he was "utterly baffled" by the penalty.
Magnussen expressed his frustration about the penalty, stating that he was utterly baffled and didn't understand it at all.
Gasly and I were battling intensely as we approached Turn 4. We had a minor collision and both of us went off the track. When we rejoined, neither car was harmed and it didn't impact our race results. Despite this, I received a 10-second penalty.
During the first lap, Daniel Ricciardo forced Nico Hulkenberg off the track at a speed of 300 km/h. This incident severely affected Hulkenberg's race, causing significant damage to his car. As a result, Ricciardo received a five-second penalty.
"What’s the reasoning behind this? I can’t understand it."
Haas has not yet announced who will take Magnussen's spot for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but it is highly probable that Oliver Bearman will step in. Bearman is set to begin his full-time Formula 1 career with the American team in 2025.
