Piastri Triumphs in Hungary Amid McLaren Team Tensions; Verstappen-Hamilton Clash Takes Center Stage
Oscar Piastri secures his inaugural Formula 1 victory in Hungary, triumphing over Lando Norris amidst a dispute over team orders within McLaren, according to Lewis Larkam's account from Budapest.
In an intense Hungarian Grand Prix marked by controversy over team orders, Oscar Piastri outpaced his McLaren colleague Lando Norris to secure his inaugural Formula 1 win.
Throughout the majority of the race, Piastri was in the lead, having taken it early on, but Norris managed to get ahead of him during the second series of pit stops, causing considerable trouble for McLaren. Despite being instructed repeatedly to allow his teammate to retake the position, Norris initially resisted.
It wasn't until Lap 68, just three laps shy of the finish, that Norris heeded the team's instruction. He reduced his speed on the main straight, enabling Piastri to close the gap and overtake him for the lead as they approached Turn 1.
As Piastri celebrates his first ever Grand Prix victory, McLaren will need to internally review and address the manner in which the British team managed the situation.
Amidst the turmoil involving McLaren, Lewis Hamilton managed to secure his 200th podium finish despite a clash with former championship adversary Max Verstappen, at a circuit he particularly enjoys.
Throughout most of the 70-lap race, Hamilton was fending off Verstappen in a fierce contest for the last podium position, but their vehicles made contact on the 63rd lap.
Verstappen made a bold move to overtake Hamilton at the first turn, but he braked too late, causing his car to overshoot the corner. His car's rear-left tire clipped Hamilton's front-right, leading to Verstappen's vehicle being launched into the air and then harshly coming to rest in the safety zone.
This resulted in the leader of the world championship falling behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and ending up in fifth place, where he ultimately concluded the race.
Verstappen experienced a greatly irritating race and was upset with the officials for looking into his incident of veering off course at Turn 1 during a battle with the McLarens.
Verstappen managed to overtake Norris but later relinquished the spot, after facing some objections, in compliance with his team's directive. The triple world champion also expressed dissatisfaction with his vehicle and was visibly upset with Red Bull's tactical approach.
Carlos Sainz secured the sixth position for Ferrari, surpassing Sergio Perez, who made a comeback from 16th to finish in seventh place.
George Russell from Mercedes, Yuki Tsunoda of RB, and Lance Stroll with Aston Martin rounded out the top 10.
