Perez’s Mixed Emotions: Analyzing His Best Finish Since Miami at the Dutch Grand Prix
How Sergio Perez and Red Bull reacted to his top F1 finish since Miami
Sergio Perez achieved his best finish since coming in fourth in Miami, securing sixth place at the Dutch Grand Prix.
Sergio Perez achieved his highest finish since the Miami Grand Prix in May, which was nine races ago, yet he felt somewhat dissatisfied with his performance at the F1 Dutch Grand Prix.
The Red Bull racer, facing significant pressure to secure his spot for the 2025 season after a series of poor showings, managed to qualify in fifth place and ended up finishing sixth at the Zandvoort race.
Perez was overtaken at the start by Ferrari's Charles Leclerc but managed to achieve his highest placement since securing fourth position in Miami over three months prior.
Nonetheless, the Mexican driver experienced ambivalent emotions following the race, confessing that Red Bull’s speed was “quite lacking” in comparison to McLaren, as Lando Norris achieved a decisive win against Max Verstappen.
Perez expressed that while the progression over the weekend was steady, he felt let down by the race pace, which was unexpectedly slow.
"I expected us to be much nearer to the McLaren. Ferrari's performance was really unexpected and, of course, so was McLaren's. There's a lot we need to analyze… It was disheartening to witness McLaren's capabilities today."
Christian Horner, the team principal of Red Bull, is optimistic that Perez can find some encouraging aspects in his performance during the Zandvoort weekend.
"He did a commendable job. His race pace was respectable," he mentioned to reporters, including those from Crash.net.
Sainz was incredibly quick at one stage, even recording the fastest lap of the race. Meanwhile, Checo had a strong performance, starting in fifth position and finishing in sixth, which I found to be a commendable effort on his part.
"He lost a spot right at the beginning, which was understandably a bit frustrating for him. However, I believe he'll find a lot of good things in his performance here, and this should hopefully set him up well for Monza."
Perez used a previous version of the car's floor and configuration, and according to Horner, this approach proved to be the most effective based on the drivers' input.
"We have tested the cars under various settings, and I believe this has provided us with a significant amount of useful information," Horner stated.
"The drivers' responses have been quite positive regarding the various setups, which, I believe, should now provide clear guidance for the engineering team."
"It seems evident that Checo had the superior race setup of the two. However, we now have data from all 72 laps, using two different types of tires, to analyze and compare that information."
