Perez Confident in Red Bull Rebound as Team Reverts to Older Spec Amid Struggles
Sergio Perez talks about Red Bull's 'downgrades' after taking a 'wrong turn'
Sergio Perez believes he can regain his performance as Red Bull switches back to an earlier version, according to Connor McDonagh's report from Zandvoort.
Sergio Perez disclosed that several Red Bull Formula 1 upgrades led him in the wrong direction, complicating his efforts to improve his challenging 2024 season.
Perez has only managed to earn 28 points over the past eight races, putting Red Bull’s lead in the constructors’ championship at risk.
With 10 races remaining in the Formula 1 season, Red Bull holds a narrow lead of just 42 points over McLaren in the constructors’ championship.
Due to his lackluster performance, there was widespread speculation that Red Bull might replace him for the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix this weekend.
In a media session at Zandvoort on Thursday, Perez shared with outlets like Crash.net the insights Red Bull gained over the F1 summer break.
"I essentially took a break and disconnected," he stated. "However, even during the summer hiatus, there's always a part of your mind that stays in touch with the engineers and the developments. Overall, I would describe it as a very productive break for Red Bull. We managed to discover a lot of things."
"At the very least, we have a clear understanding of the car's current state. There have been one or two upgrades that may have led us in the wrong direction."
Reflecting on it now, we have a clear understanding of the car's performance, which is a significant improvement compared to the ambiguity we faced in recent races. Whether we can resolve the issues and regain our previous level of performance remains uncertain, but this clarity is definitely a positive development.
Perez will likely be using an older version of the F1 car as Red Bull switches back to previous components to assist the Mexican driver in regaining his performance.
When asked if they considered them 'downgrades,' Perez responded, “We now have a clear understanding of our car's position. I prefer to keep the specifics within the team, but we will be addressing it.”
"You'll soon see what we're planning with the cars, but it's something that will remain within the team. However, we've definitely made a mistake along the way."
He mentioned that he has faced challenges, particularly in a specific area. While he couldn't delve into specifics, he acknowledged that many of his difficulties have been related to this. He expressed that it's difficult to articulate the extent of these issues, but clarified that it's not a matter of his driving skills deteriorating since the start of the year.
"Undoubtedly, there have been certain issues that didn't work in my favor, which negatively impacted me. Additionally, we likely weren't getting the best performance out of the car in those situations."
Post-Summer Break Discussion
There was extensive coverage suggesting that the gathering after the Belgian Grand Prix was intended to deliberate on Perez's future with the team and the possibility of his replacement.
Nonetheless, Perez insists that his conversation was focused on performance, not on his future.
