Oscar Piastri Weighs In on McLaren’s Contested Speed: ‘Quickest, But Not By Much’ in F1 2024 Race
Oscar Piastri: 'McLaren's F1 Vehicle Could Lead in Speed Next Year, But Marginally'
"I believe it's among the fastest"
Oscar Piastri mentions that if the McLaren Formula 1 squad possesses the fastest vehicle right now in the 2024 season, "the margin is extremely slim."
McLaren holds the runner-up position in the constructors' standings halfway through the 2024 season, with Lando Norris and Piastri each securing victories in grand prix races.
In a closely contested race for the lead, Red Bull is ahead with 408 points, holding a slim 42-point advantage over McLaren, while Ferrari trails in third place with 345 points.
As we approach the summer hiatus, victories have been divided among Red Bull, McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes, with the latter experiencing a notable improvement in performance lately.
Following the Belgian Grand Prix, where Piastri finished in third place and Norris came in fifth, the Australian feels that the McLaren currently ranks among the top vehicles, though the margin is slight.
"Piastri mentioned to Sky Sports F1 that it's among the fastest, indeed."
"In my opinion, we had the fastest pace in Budapest. However, at Spa, I believe I committed too many errors during the qualifying rounds, which ultimately had a negative impact on our performance."
"However, the competition is extremely close. If we're leading, it's by a very slim margin."
"It appears that Red Bull demonstrated impressive speed at Spa this weekend, though Max [Verstappen] encountered some challenges with turbulent air. Additionally, Mercedes showed their strength too."
"I believe we had a slight advantage, but we didn't have the favorable track position to make the most of it."
Norris currently holds the number two position in the championship rankings as the summer hiatus begins, trailing 78 points behind the defending world champion, Verstappen.
Norris expressed satisfaction with his team's efforts but lamented over the errors he committed throughout the season, which resulted in missed chances to score significantly.
"He expressed his team's great satisfaction."
"I believe that in the recent races, I've made several mistakes and lost many points as a result. Therefore, I need a brief pause to recalibrate and return with renewed strength."
The 2024 season signifies McLaren's inaugural year since 2012 in which both of its drivers have clinched grand prix victories, with Piastri's triumph at the Hungarian GP representing only its third win on a Sunday since the conclusion of 2012.
