A Scottish Conservative Member of the Scottish Parliament has refuted claims that he employed artificial intelligence to generate nearly 1,000 questions for parliament, amid allegations of squandering £100,000 of public funds.

Calls have been made for Douglas Lumsden to issue an apology and reimburse the expenses linked to the 987 inquiries raised in January.

The inquiries sought details regarding the quantity of sauce packets, salt and pepper sachets at Holyrood, as well as the total number of straws acquired by the Scottish government over the past decade.

The Scottish National Party reported that inquiries were made regarding the number of flags from the Scottish parliament that had disappeared in the last ten years, as well as the total count and height of flagpoles owned.

The Member of the Scottish Parliament representing North East Scotland raised questions about the typical earnings or deficits from honey jar sales at the Holyrood store. Additionally, they inquired into the methods used to confirm that the beeswax for the Great Seal of Scotland is sourced from the parliament's own bees.

The lawmaker pointed out that his Scottish Labour colleagues, Monica Lennon and Jackie Baillie, had posed more questions than he had during this session of parliament.

Mr. Lumsden stated, "I will persist in challenging this corrupt administration and refuse to be muted in defending the interests of the northeast."

Scottish Labour declined to respond to Mr. Lumsden's remarks.

Richard Broadbent, previously a legal counsel for Natural England, criticized government policies, asserting that they've instilled a "chilling effect" on environmental restoration projects. He argued that this is due to the government imposing inheritance taxes on farmers while simultaneously requiring them to allocate land for the development and enhancement of natural habitats.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves declared in the October budget that starting in April 2026, farms valued over £1 million will be subject to a 20% inheritance tax. Previously, all farms were exempt from this tax.

Proponents of the reform argue that it will drastically cut down on the exploitation of farmland for major tax evasion, align the agricultural value of land more closely with its market price, and promote wider variation in land ownership.

However, the decision has been criticized by farmers who once more drove their tractors to Whitehall to demonstrate on Monday.

The administration has expressed its dedication to supporting agriculturalists and is actively developing environmentally friendly agricultural practices that not only benefit the ecosystem but also aim to increase farmers' earnings.

"This method is equitable and impartial, aiming to improve the public services essential to everyone, impacting approximately 500 estates annually."
