The Health Secretary has criticized Elon Musk for making comments that were "ill-informed" and "poorly assessed" regarding the UK government's handling of grooming gangs.

Wes Streeting has called on the tech mogul and owner of X to actively engage and assist the government in addressing online child sexual abuse and exploitation.

Mr. Streeting responded to inquiries regarding Mr. Musk's growing involvement in UK politics, noting that he is also set to become the efficiency tsar for US President-elect Donald Trump later this month.

Elon Musk, who has expressed support for Reform UK on the platform X and is said to be thinking about contributing financially to Nigel Farage's party, has voiced his disapproval of how the government managed cases of child sexual exploitation in various towns and cities over ten years ago.

He has accused Sir Keir Starmer of not successfully prosecuting "rape gangs" during his tenure at the head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). In 2013, Sir Keir implemented revised protocols regarding the treatment of child sexual abuse victims and the formulation and presentation of cases in court.

Mr. Musk contended that Minister for Safeguarding Jess Phillips should be incarcerated following her dismissal of Oldham Council's pleas for a national investigation into child sexual exploitation cases in the area.

When questioned by journalists about whether Mr. Musk's remarks were detrimental, Mr. Streeting responded: "I believe some of the critiques Elon Musk has offered are misguided and definitely poorly informed."

"We're open to collaborating with Elon Musk. I believe he has a significant part to play through his social media platform in assisting us and other nations to address this critical problem. So if he's ready to get involved and put in the effort, we would certainly welcome his participation."

The health secretary also expressed his belief that "political correctness sometimes hindered efforts to confront those responsible for committing these grave offenses."

He emphasized, "We won't allow that to occur."

Explaining her decision to turn down the proposal for an investigation into Oldham, Ms. Phillips, the Labour representative for Birmingham Yardley, expressed that although she acknowledges the "strong emotions" surrounding the issue, she holds the view that it is the responsibility of "Oldham Council itself to initiate a local inquiry into child sexual exploitation, rather than having the government step in."

In a message on X, Mr. Musk alleged, "the genuine cause [Ms. Phillips] is avoiding probing into the rape gangs is clearly because it would result in pointing fingers at Keir Starmer (who was the chief of the CPS then)."

Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the Conservative Party, has demanded a countrywide investigation into the grooming scandal, while opposition ministers have penned a letter to Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, urging her to reconsider the choice not to initiate a nationwide inquiry into Oldham.

The letter stated that only a formal legal investigation could properly address the widespread scope of these offenses and issues, and also examine if the police, the Crown Prosecution Service, and the local council neglected or possibly concealed the reports.

In 2002, Amanda Solloway, who was serving as the Conservative safeguarding minister at the time, penned a letter to Oldham Council. This correspondence later came to light, revealing that she had dismissed an earlier plea from the council for the establishment of a public inquiry by the government.

Similarly to Ms. Phillips, Ms. Solloway advocated for an inquiry that would be conducted at the local level.

In its concluding report released in 2022, the Independent Inquiry into Child Sex Abuse characterized child sexual abuse as a widespread crisis, impacting tens of thousands with its destructive consequences.

Heading the investigation was Professor Alexis Jay, known for revealing the extent of child sexual exploitation in Rotherham. The inquiry focused on abuse perpetrated by organized groups, sparked by numerous convictions for sexual offenses against children throughout the UK from 2010 to 2014.

The text suggests that organizations dealing with children should be legally mandated to report any suspicions of child sexual abuse.

In November of the previous year, Prof Jay expressed her frustration over the fact that, more than two years following the conclusion of the inquiry, not one of the 20 suggested recommendations had been put into action.

Mr. Streeting stated that the government is fully dedicated to adopting all the suggestions from Professor Jay's report.

"He affirmed the government's dedication to putting into action the findings from the investigation into child sexual abuse."

Several aristocrats have gained seats in parliament solely due to their lineage. In the House of Lords, 92 positions are reserved for male successors from certain families, and presently, 88 of these men occupy seats in this legislative body, participating in the voting on laws.

The origins of this particular anomaly in our parliamentary system are unclear, but Sir Keir Starmer's administration is making efforts to put a stop to it.

The prime minister has declared the hereditary right to occupy a seat in the upper house as "indefensible," and his administration has initiated steps to permanently abolish the inclusion of hereditary peers.

This change will require individuals holding hereditary titles to participate in a system that could lead to their removal from positions they were once guaranteed for life.

"This is essentially an aggressive usurpation of constitutional norms. It enables the prime minister to eliminate political adversaries and dictate admissions into the House of Lords."

Indeed, more than fifty percent of the hereditary peers align with the Conservative Party, while remarkably, only four identify as members of the Labour Party.

However, eliminating the hereditary peers does not significantly alter the overall makeup of the House of Lords.

The House of Lords is currently composed of 70% male members. The removal of these peers would only decrease this percentage by 3%. Additionally, the overall proportion of Conservative peers in the House would decrease by just 2% should all hereditary peers depart suddenly.

Widespread Change

Discussions on reform have been ongoing since the 18th century, particularly focusing on limiting the growing size of the chamber, which currently exceeds 800 members.

Yet, even with continual pledges for change from various administrations, the House has only increased in size.

Aristocratic members argue that following the initial phase of reform, the government will likely lose interest in pursuing further modernization of the upper house.

In 1999, Blair reduced the number of hereditary peers, having earlier committed to eliminating them entirely.

While 650 left, an agreement was made for 92 to stay on, with succession plans through a peculiar byelection system allowing only hereditary peers to replace those who passed away or retired.

Baroness Smith, the current leader of the Lords, has criticized the elections as an odd and nearly disgraceful aspect of our democratic process. She likened them to the fictional Dunny-on-the-Wold election depicted in Blackadder, where a single voter constitutes the entire electorate.

The government has accelerated its efforts to eliminate these peerages, but it's also apparent that Labour has scaled back its commitments to more extensive reforms in the Lords.

Before the election, there was talk of completely eliminating the upper house.

In their platform, the party adjusted their position to diminish the size of the Lords by implementing a retirement age, however, this proposal was omitted from the King's speech and the government has not provided any schedule for achieving these goals.

Baroness Smith maintains that these are ongoing commitments, with the government actively exploring ways to fulfill them. However, the process appears to be progressing more slowly than the initial phase of phasing out hereditary peers, who are expected to permanently retire their traditional garments after this parliamentary session concludes.

Kemi Badenoch has demanded a nationwide investigation into the widespread grooming scandal in various UK towns and cities, stating that such an inquiry is "long overdue."

The Conservative party chief stated that 2025 should be designated as the year for victims to achieve justice. This declaration came following revelations that Jess Phillips, the minister responsible for safeguarding, had dismissed Oldham council's request for a public investigation into child exploitation incidents in the locality.

On X, the Conservative leader posted: "A comprehensive nationwide investigation into the rape gangs scandal is far past due."

"Over the past few years, there have been numerous trials across the nation, yet it seems that those in power have not connected the pieces. It is imperative that 2025 becomes the year when victims finally begin to receive justice."

Ms Badenoch's efforts were supported by shadow safeguarding minister Alicia Kearns, who wrote to Ms. Phillips urging her to overturn the government's stance on Oldham.

"She requested the implementation of proposed Conservative policies to overturn the decision made in Oldham and called for a formal investigation into the grooming and rape gangs," she stated.

Over ten years ago, girls as young as 11 fell victim to grooming and rape in several English towns such as Oldham, Rochdale, Rotherham, and Telford, a horrifying reality that came to national attention in 2013.

In a study conducted by Professor Alexis Jay, it was disclosed that approximately 1,400 girls fell victim to abuse in Rotherham from 1997 to 2013. The report also highlighted the lack of action from police and social services during this period.

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA), led by Prof Jay, concluded in its final report released in 2022 that child sexual exploitation by networks persists across England and Wales, occurring in extremely harmful and degrading manners.

The concluding document suggested a legal mandate for organizations dealing with children to report any suspected cases of child sexual abuse.

In correspondence with Oldham Council from October of the previous year, Ms. Phillips, the Labour representative for Birmingham Yardley, acknowledged the intense public emotion surrounding the issue but expressed her view that it should be up to Oldham Council itself to initiate a local investigation into child sexual exploitation instead of seeking governmental interference.

She stated: "I appreciate the council's decision to proceed, as outlined in your letter, and to maintain its crucial efforts with victims and survivors.

"If the council decides to move forward, I am eager to see the results of the investigation and to make sure that any insights gained to enhance our initial response are implemented both locally and, if relevant, nationally."
