Monza Mayhem: Ricciardo Apologizes for Hulkenberg Clash, Tsunoda’s Frustrations Boil Over
Daniel Ricciardo addresses collision with Nico Hulkenberg: “I believed there was enough room; I said sorry”
Daniel Ricciardo comments on the Haas incident during the F1 Italian Grand Prix
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he said sorry to Nico Hulkenberg after they collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull racer Ricciardo clashed with Hulkenberg during the first lap of Sunday's race at Monza, as they were fighting for position in the middle of the pack at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned he believed he had enough room, but then he experienced a collision, which caused Hulkenberg's Haas to go off track and allowed Kevin Magnussen, Hulkenberg’s teammate, to pass him.
The Australian driver received a five-second penalty for the incident. However, he later had to serve a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics made contact with his car while he was serving the initial penalty during his pit stop.
Ricciardo finished a challenging race at his home track for the Red Bull team in 13th place.
"In the end, we just didn't have the speed today, penalties aside," he commented.
"We gave it our best effort, and I was really having fun with the close racing at the beginning, but I ended up touching Nico at Turn 8."
"After the race, I talked to him and explained that I believed there was enough space, but I felt the collision, so I didn't give him sufficient room. I apologized for that."
"It's challenging because you push yourself, but even the tiniest details can have a big impact."
"The vehicle performed adequately after that, and we exerted maximum effort with our available resources. From Friday afternoon until today, I was striving to extract the utmost potential from the car."
"In my opinion, I am feeling significantly better this weekend, and we came very close to earning points."
Tsunoda's race ended in frustration
The Italian Grand Prix for the Red Bull team was heavily influenced by Nico Hulkenberg, according to team member Laurent Mekies. A crash involving the Haas driver and Yuki Tsunoda brought an end to the Japanese driver's race.
“I’m quite upset; it’s disappointing that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico,” Tsunoda expressed.
"I attempted to give ample room, but it appeared he froze up, lost control, and collided with me."
"Regrettably, we had to pull the car out of the race due to damage sustained on the floor."
“I immediately sensed it and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was skidding, making it impossible for me to control it.”
"Upcoming races in Baku and Singapore should suit our car, so we're optimistic about having successful weekends ahead."
Mekies is upset about the Tsunoda incident because it cost him crucial time on the track with the newly updated RB car at Monza.
"Today’s race was largely influenced by Hulkenberg. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Following this, Nico collided with Yuki, which ultimately led to our decision to retire the car," he stated.
"The most disappointing part of Yuki’s retirement is that it cost us 40 laps which could have helped us better comprehend the new updates we implemented."
“Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty because we failed to properly carry out the initial penalty.
"We must assess our protocols in this situation and take lessons from the error made today. Although such incidents occur, our pit crew's performance has mostly been outstanding this season."
