Mitsubishi Set to Join Forces with Honda and Nissan in Electrification and Software Alliance to Challenge Global EV Leaders
Mitsubishi is expected to enter a collaboration involving Honda and Nissan, focusing on electrification and software development, according to reports.
In March, Honda and Nissan revealed they were exploring a partnership, initially engaging in a feasibility study to assess the collaboration's potential.
According to a Sunday report by Japan's Nikkei newspaper, Mitsubishi is set to collaborate with Honda and Nissan to iron out the specifics of their alliance, focusing especially on the standardization of software systems within their vehicles.
According to the Nikkei, the alliance will result in two major automotive conglomerates in Japan, positioning them to more effectively compete with Tesla and various Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers.
Toyota along with its affiliated companies will make up one coalition, while Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi will constitute another alliance. Together, these groups sold more than 19 million vehicles last year.
Mitsubishi has a significant partnership with Nissan, as both companies are key members of the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance. They collaborate on platform sharing and electric vehicle technology. Additionally, Nissan holds about 34% of Mitsubishi's shares.
Mitsubishi and Honda have previously collaborated. Their latest partnership involved a trial in battery leasing through a joint venture called Altna.
Japanese automakers have fallen behind international competitors in introducing electric vehicles and are currently working to close the gap. China's dominance in the electric vehicle market enabled it to surpass Japan, becoming the top vehicle exporter globally last year.
In May, Toyota, Mazda, and Subaru collaborated to innovate the next wave of internal combustion engines.
