Mercedes Under Fire: Eddie Jordan Warns Against Replacing Hamilton with Rookie Kimi Antonelli
Mercedes has been cautioned that swapping Lewis Hamilton for Kimi Antonelli would be "unfair and a mistake."
"You're placing immense pressure on him," the team has been advised.
Mercedes is poised to make an "error" in selecting Lewis Hamilton's successor.
This information comes from Eddie Jordan, an ex-F1 team principal who is concerned about the new driver expected to replace Hamilton.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a young prodigy nurtured by Mercedes, is expected to advance to Formula 1 next season, according to numerous reports.
Mercedes has not yet announced who will take over for Hamilton, who is set to join Ferrari.
During an episode of his Formula For Success podcast, Jordan expressed his belief that the decision to choose Antonelli will likely be made, although he personally considers it an error.
"You are placing immense stress on him."
"Mercedes ought to compete for the constructors' championship while also taking care of Antonelli, aligning with Toto's intentions."
"Exposing him to intense scrutiny, like a deer caught in the headlights… that's something you want to avoid. It's simply not just."
"Currently, his performance in Formula 2 isn't convincing me that he's prepared to win grand prix races or handle the pressure at Mercedes."
Seventeen-year-old Italian racer Antonelli skipped F3 and jumped directly into his debut season in F2 this year.
He has achieved victory in both a sprint race and a feature race up to this point.
However, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has frequently praised Antonelli's exceptional abilities.
Only three spots are left to fill the 2025 Formula 1 driver roster—Sauber, Red Bull, and Mercedes. However, there are no prominent contenders left to take over for Hamilton.
It appears that Wolff's confidence in Antonelli will lead to the young driver being chosen to succeed Hamilton in 2025.
