Mercedes Snubs Carlos Sainz for Hamilton Replacement, Backs Teenage Prodigy Antonelli
Carlos Sainz receives disappointing update from Mercedes, who prioritize finding a successor for Lewis Hamilton
Mercedes and Carlos Sainz engaged in important discussions at Imola
According to reports, Mercedes has informed Carlos Sainz that he will not be selected as Lewis Hamilton's replacement.
Hamilton's decision to join Ferrari in 2025 has created a highly desirable vacancy in the F1 lineup, making Sainz a clear candidate.
Carlos Sainz from Ferrari has lost his position to Lewis Hamilton and has been in discussions with various teams, one of which is Mercedes.
Mercedes notified Sainz at Imola two weeks ago that they will not be extending an offer to him to replace Hamilton, as reported by Gazzetta.
According to the Italian newspaper, Mercedes is determined to have Andrea Kimi Antonelli join their team as a driver.
At only 17 years old, Antonelli, an Italian racer, is participating in his debut season of Formula 2.
However, he has recently tested Mercedes F1 cars on two occasions, indicating that Toto Wolff was interested in evaluating his performance.
Encouraged by the results observed during the testing period, Wolff reportedly intends to appoint the young Antonelli as his driver for the coming year.
During last week’s event in Monaco, Wolff acknowledged that while Sainz is undoubtedly a well-regarded option, his focus was directed towards other possibilities.
The head of Mercedes suggested he would be open to letting Sainz join a competing Formula 1 team if it provided him with additional time to develop Antonelli.
Sources suggest that Wolff is keen to avoid a scenario similar to when a young Max Verstappen joined Red Bull, with the aim of retaining Antonelli.
Hamilton personally supported Antonelli for the 2025 position and urged Mercedes to provide him with the vehicle.
The daring move to trust the exceptional skill means that the seasoned and accomplished Sainz will need to find a new direction for his future.
