Mercedes Set for Dutch Grand Prix Reboot: Analyzing the Spa Upgrade U-Turn and Zandvoort Revival Plan
Mercedes announces a reversal on their F1 upgrade after encountering issues at Spa. They outline a strategy to bring back the Spa upgrade at Zandvoort later this month.
Mercedes intend to implement their latest Formula 1 updates when the season continues at the Dutch Grand Prix later this month.
Following the debut of a new floor and several other components on Friday at the Belgian Grand Prix, Mercedes has decided to return to their Silverstone setup.
This happened because Mercedes had difficulty with their speed at Spa-Francorchamps, experiencing bouncing in the fast corners.
At first, there were indications that Mercedes faced the same bouncing issue that Ferrari encountered after implementing their new floor upgrade.
Still, the head of trackside engineering, Andrew Shovlin, believes that the upgrades weren't entirely responsible for their issues.
"We intend to proceed with that plan," he mentioned in the team's most recent post-race debrief video. "The reason we switched the car back to the Silverstone setup on Friday night is that we performed well at Silverstone. The corner speed range at Spa and Silverstone is quite similar, so there isn't a significant difference between the two tracks."
"It seems that we unintentionally caused some issues. We believe these problems were mainly due to the way we operated the car in Spa, rather than being a result of the updates."
"The car was experiencing some instability in the high-speed turns and had a few balance problems. Switching to the Silverstone setup resolved these issues and restored normal performance."
In a brilliant move, Lewis Hamilton secured his second win of the 2024 F1 season, with Mercedes initially achieving a 1-2 finish on the track before George Russell was disqualified.
Mercedes plans to analyze the data during the summer break and intends to bring them back at Zandvoort.
"We've had the opportunity to review the data to make sense of our actions, and we are quite sure that we will proceed with a reintroduction in Zandvoort," he stated.
In 2024, only Red Bull has secured more race victories than Mercedes, marking a stunning reversal of fortune since Mercedes hadn't even reached the podium before the Canadian Grand Prix in June.
