Mercedes Faces Crucial Test at Spanish GP: Can New Updates Cure W15’s Weakness?
Mercedes concerned about key F1 'vulnerability' ahead of Spanish Grand Prix
Toto Wolff believes the Spanish GP will clearly indicate the advancements Mercedes has achieved.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff states that the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix in Formula 1 will showcase the extent of improvements made to address the primary flaw of the W15 car.
The German carmaker had anticipated narrowing the distance to Red Bull after redesigning their vehicle over the winter, but their 2024 model has faced difficulties maintaining consistent performance in both high-speed and low-speed turns this year.
Mercedes is feeling optimistic due to the initial performance of a newly implemented front wing in Monaco, thinking it might be crucial in overcoming their challenges and improving their results this season.
Following the distinctive track designs seen in Monaco and Canada, Formula 1 will head back to a traditional racecourse in Barcelona, characterized by a blend of high-speed, medium-speed, and slow-speed turns.
"Barcelona will serve as an excellent benchmark for our development," stated Mercedes team principal Wolff.
"The track features a variety of corner speeds, ranging from fast to medium to slow, along with a lengthy straightaway and significant elevation changes. This diverse speed range has been challenging for us this year."
This weekend will offer us another chance to assess our advancements from recent updates, and we aim to continue the positive momentum we gained in Montreal.
Mercedes' performance in Canada was unexpectedly strong, with George Russell and Lewis Hamilton consistently competing at the front throughout the weekend, culminating in the team's best finish of the season with third and fourth places.
"We have steadily improved with each race," Wolff stated.
“It was uplifting to make further progress in Canada. Witnessing this culminate in our best team performance of the season serves as a testament to everyone's dedication and effort."
The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve stands out due to its distinct characteristics. Unlike more conventional tracks, it features a limited variety of corner speeds and has recently been resurfaced, making it an unusual course.
"We understand that our rivals will be stronger in the upcoming races, so we must keep putting in the effort to regularly compete for podium finishes and, ultimately, race victories."
