Mercedes Eyes the Future: Toto Wolff Hints at Andrea Kimi Antonelli as 2025 F1 Driver, Carlos Sainz Informed of Decision
Toto Wolff practically confirms Kimi Antonelli's move after discussing Carlos Sainz
Is this the most definitive sign from Toto Wolff that Andrea Kimi Antonelli will be joining the Mercedes team?
Toto Wolff has announced that Mercedes has told Carlos Sainz there will be no spot open next to George Russell for the 2025 Formula 1 season.
Wolff has suggested that Mercedes is likely to bring in junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli to take over for Lewis Hamilton.
Over the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, Wolff mentioned to Sky Germany on Friday that Mercedes aims to focus on Antonelli.
Wolff additionally mentioned that Mercedes has notified Sainz, allowing him to decide on his future independently instead of delaying.
"We're focusing on Kimi because he represents our future with young drivers," Wolff mentioned to Sky Germany.
"We've informed Carlos that our intention is to focus on young drivers and we are dedicated to that goal."
Mercedes has yet to reveal their complete roster of drivers.
Antonelli, who is still 17 years old, is actively participating in the FIA Formula 2 championship and will celebrate his 18th birthday in August
Wolff was subsequently questioned once more regarding the issue during Sky Sports F1's broadcast following the qualifying session.
Wolff once again emphasized that they didn't want to leave Sainz in suspense, suggesting strongly that Antonelli will be promoted to the team for the 2025 season.
"I believe Carlos truly merits a position at the top. His performance has been outstanding. However, we have decided to take a new direction and redefine ourselves for the future, and Kimi Antonelli is certainly a key element in this plan."
"We haven't made a decision for next year yet, but we didn't want to keep Carlos waiting because he needs to make his own plans. It's only fair. He's performing exceptionally well."
