McLaren’s Meteoric Rise: Are They Now the Fastest Car in F1?
Are McLaren's cars currently the quickest in F1?
McLaren executives ponder if their vehicles are the top performers in Formula 1.
McLaren executives have minimized concerns about possessing the quickest vehicle in Formula 1, even after Lando Norris secured a victory at the Dutch Grand Prix.
Norris secured the top spot in qualifying on Saturday and went on to win the race on Sunday, finishing 22 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen, who came in second.
After failing to secure a win in the last five races, Red Bull might see Zandvoort as the pivotal race where McLaren emerged as the top team in the sport.
2024 F1 Dutch Grand Prix – Final Standings
McLaren CEO Zak Brown told Sky Sports that "the difference was significant."
"We were aware of our speed throughout the weekend. While the gap's size is surprising, it’s a pleasant one."
"After Lando found himself in a clear track, he managed to dominate the race effortlessly."
"We remain unaware of the specifics of each track until we arrive."
"The improvements were evidently effective. We must stay grounded and not expect the same outcome every weekend."
When questioned about whether McLaren's car has surpassed the speed of the previously dominant Red Bull RB20, he responded, "I believe it's difficult to determine. It's evident that our car is very quick."
"We have some exciting developments planned for Monza, which is a unique circuit. I anticipate that Red Bull will perform well there."
Team leader Andrea Stella commented, "The speed of the car relies on the specific circumstances."
"Locations like Barcelona and Hungary worked well for our car. With our recent upgrades, our goal is to have the top-performing car at every track. This is what we're aiming for."
Stella commented on Norris' victory, describing it as "immensely gratifying and surpassing all expectations."
"We were aware that the car was performing admirably, but today's speed was an unexpectedly pleasant surprise."
"It's fantastic that Lando was able to secure a commanding win. Oscar unfortunately got caught in traffic; he earned a spot on the podium and could have challenged Verstappen."
McLaren is currently trailing Red Bull by only 30 points in the constructors' championship.
"We're experiencing a powerful momentum and need to have faith in it," Stella commented regarding their efforts to surpass Red Bull.
“We will put forth our maximum effort, however, we are up against Red Bull, a team that has been dominant in recent seasons."
"We have the capability to make an attempt."
Bernie Collins from Sky Sports provided analysis, stating: "They were the team that showed the most progress last year. We wondered, 'Can they keep it up?'"
"This year is particularly extraordinary. We didn't anticipate winning by such a large margin, nor did we expect to secure pole position with such a significant lead."
Next weekend's F1 Italian Grand Prix at Monza presents McLaren with a fresh chance to challenge Red Bull, as they plan to introduce new upgrades.
